Although the 5.0 are more problematic, BMW engines (with few exceptions) are pretty solid, barring abuse. The inline 6 engines are more or less bullet proof as far as major engine issues. I have:

E24 with an M30 (absolutely buttetproof)
E46 M3 best car that I have ever owned with best engine ever (some douchbags abused the car early in production requiring rod bearing recall and TWS oil switch)
E90 328i, one of the best cars I have ever owned.
And of course the F15 3.5 which, knock on wood, has been the most useful car I have ever owned although I do not like the increased dependency of computerized systems, and some of the early fails are concerning.

I also have had an E36 M3 which was a sold car engine wise as well as many others.

Bought a pre-owned 2016 X5 x35i with 38k kms recently.

Mechanical fitness assessment shows everything ok dated on Jan 6, but shortly after the engine was replaced. What the difference between short engine and exchange short engine?

Had the car inspected by an independent shop; found a couple of issues such as engine oil leaking and differential oil leaking; had the issues checked and repaired.

Found a oil stain after picking up the car home, verified as transmission oil leaking from transmission cooler orings and got repaired.

Warranty will be expired soon. Should I buy extended warranty? [IMG][/IMG]

Another one bites the dust! I'm looking at it like why buy an extended warranty when the biggest ticket items are brand new now anyway.. and I was told my new motor comes with a two year warranty. I believe that exchange = remanufactured.

So now mine needs a thrust arm bushing (which I believe is the same thing) as well. This thing is becoming a pain in my ass!

Thanks. I was told there is one year warranty for the new engine.
My Volvo XC70 is 16 years old now and there is no major issues. This 2016 BMW is only 38k kms, and it should not have so many problems; engine failure, output shaft seal leaking, transmission cooler O-ring leaking. But on the other hand, the engine is new with one year warranty and all issues were fixed. Probably I will not proceed with an extended warranty.

Anyone experience issues with their exterior door handles where it feels like there is no click or action when you open the door? Almost as if you could just pull the door open. This is more prevalent on the drivers side front door compared to the others most likely due to high use. Note I do not have soft close doors.

Don't get me wrong there are still plenty of things that can go wrong (knock on wood) and make an extended warranty worth it. It just seems less likely after so much has been done already.

extended warranties on f15 are very pricey (about 1.5k per year). in my opinion far too expensive to justify having them.

Seems a common issue. My car is only 38k kms; both output shaft seal leaks.

Just picked up a 2017 X5. Not sure if this is a issue or not or some sort of setting. On the pic is the rectangular box on the speedometer normal or some sort of bulb, wiring, or malfunction?

I will see mine slightly every now and then. That looks a little too pronounced. Maybe try dimming your dash lights but you wouldn't think you should be having that problem. Still under warranty?

if it's still under warranty i'd go over it with a fine toothed comb. Might even had an independent guy hook up a really computer to it... not just something at a parts place and make sure you know ALL the codes it's thrown.

So the bmw dealer I bought it from is telling me that is normal and my X5 does not come with the extended information cluster which is why it has the rectangular outline. Does that make sense? Is that true?

To make story short, soon after I passed 50k warranty, my rear right door started acting up and opening the latch while driving.

I took it to BMW and they wanted to charge me just up of $1600 to replace the door handle and the latch. I told the representative that they were not going to charge me simply because I was over warranty for a few miles for something that is a safety issue.

To go ahead, put it back together, and when a passenger falls out, I'll just get a lawyer. The representative said to please give him 5 minutes that he will call me back. He called back in about 3 minutes and said they will cover it for free and they would need about 48hrs to get the parts and knock it out.

Yeah, not paying for something that's a safety issue guys 🤣.

Other issue I had was that while cleaning the engine bay I noticed the PVC hose (small section) was cracked in the back. Apparently it's a common problem. I put in an oil catch can now so no issues 😎.

THIS ^^^.
Better to sock that money away in an ETF and then use it if you need it.
