Broken X6M badge from grill

As I was leaving the hand car wash place I go to, there was an M5 in line that was waiting to get in. The owner of the car asks me "are you missing something?" I didn't know what he meant by that and asked him what am I missing? He tells me that the X from the X6M badge on the left kidney grill fell off. So I go inside and see it sitting on the floor where my car was washed. The M5 driver said it happened to him a few times. Did this happen to anyone here? That's a little upsetting that this would break off so easily just from getting a car wash. Does the badge come as a separate piece or does the whole left kidney grill need to be ordered?

The first time I washed my X5 M after installing the M Performance black kidney grills, the "X" came off. I laid it in the sun to dry, and stuck it back on. Fortunately, it's stayed in place since then.

Exactly the same thing happened to me when the car was 1-2 months old ( also the X part ). BMW replaced it under warranty as I insisted that its their fault since they have used inappropriate glue for the weather conditions in my region. Took 20 min once I brought the car in but I don't know if they replaced the grill or just the sticker.
Ps. I didn't mention anything about washing the car to them.

I'd stick or glue that thing back on myself, personally. Not sure what was used originally (double sided tape?), but should be a super easy fix, IMO. Easier than taking the darn thing in...

I agree, but in my case I had no idea when exactly it fell off and I didn't have the piece so...

Man, that sucks! One would think BMW would come up with a better design.

It is a tiny little section of double sided tape that seems to hold those items on the grills. The tape was a bit over 1/16th of an inch thick, and shaped like an X along the back of the letter X.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. I'm shocked to see how many of us have the same problem. The X seems to be the one that breaks off. It's upsetting that you pay this much for a new car only for pieces like this to fall off. Bmw should have found a better way to stick the badge on. The car wash acknowledged that they were the one who did the damage and will be fixing it by a reputable shop close by.

Personally I wouldn't use gorilla or any or cyanoacrylate (crazy glue) as it is super inflexible and doesn't do well at low temps. But double sided tape will hold a gorilla onto anything...

This is my brand new OEM black grill that I will be installing on my X5M this week. You can see how loose it comes from the factory :/

Yeah, that's goofy that is OEM spec... Someone should be punched in the gut whoever approved that piece. That's garbage!

Maybe go with aftermarket kidney grill? Less headache since it doesn't have the badge.

Haha this also happened to me, I thought someone had tried to steal it or something stupid.. Dodgy/insufficient tape makes sense.

it's such a shoddy piece. At least since I swapped my grilles's out from OEM chrome to black I've got a spare "X" should one of them fall off... I wonder if I shouldn't do something in the mean time to make sure it won't fall off. Perhaps some preventative "maintenance"?

When mine fell off, I dried if off, laid it in direct sun, with the tape side face-up, and once the glue was good and hot from the sun, I pressed that sucker back onto the grill with full force, and held for a minute or so. Mine is now stuck on solidly, and would take a decent amount of effort to rip off again.

Ya. I'm doing the same thing...my dealer wanted to "throw out" the old chrome ones

That little "x" is worth like $200 on the black market now
