Googone20’s Carbon Black Oil Burner Build!!

Hey guys, been around for a bit already, but I thought I would finally start an official build thread no that the weather is nice. Had my F15 since the Fall, but haven’t made a ton of progress with the mods or upgrades until now. Need to document more of my progress, but it’s more difficult these days with 4 kids. For those who recognize my screen name, I have been involved in the BMW community for years now. Have owned a lot of toys over years. E28 M5, E34 M5, E39’s, E38, several E46 M3’s, E60 M5, E63 M6, F30 Msport, 2013 X5 35d, etc, etc. I think I am somewhere around 30 BMW’s total over the years. I will do my best to show the changes and improvements I make to my current 2015 X5 35d. It is a full option car minus night vision. Even has vented seats, soft closed doors, extended leather, driver assistant plus, LED headlights, M-Dynamic suspension, 3rd row, etc. I bought this to replace my 2013 35d that I absolutely loved. I am now on my 3rd BMW diesel as my daily. 2015 328d Msport, 2013 X5 35d, and 2015 X5 35d. I have a long 45-60min commute into work daily, and the diesels work out great for me personally. Plenty of low end torque for daily driving, and great economy for the long hauls. I’ll start my build with some pictures of my 2013 X5 35d. My brother-in-law decided to buy it off of me, and currently owns it. Of course I did a lot of mods to it over the time I owned it.

Here are the pictures of my F15 when I first bought it last year. I purchased the vehicle out of North Carolina. Flew down and drove it back up to Michigan. As you can see it was 100 percent bone stock when I got it.

First thing I HAD to do was badge delete the entire car, and then get everything super clean. I also decided to throw some Blizzak’s on the stock wheels since winter was coming. I have always had great results with Blizzak’s on my cars. They don’t ride as nice as the Michelin’s, but they make up for that with excellent grip and stopping power. Safety is always the main concern in harsh winter conditions. I also decided to swap on some OEM X5M grills I picked up. I have the OEM side gills also, but I want to have them wrapped in gloss black film before I mount them.

That is one clean e70 are you planning on using the 310s on the f15?

Edit: nm saw you had 612s on other thread

Yes, I ended up going with OEM 612M’s for now. I may switch to 22’s again eventually, but honestly I like the ability to run Michelin PSS’s again.

One of the things I absolutely HAD to do with both of my X5’s was remove the phone cradle from the center consoles. It takes up so much room and makes it very awkward to use. I purchased the OEM delete panel and went to work.

Saw a few guys on the forums posting some pictures up for key fob covers. I can’t stand for things to get knocked up or scratched, so I sourced a pair of these silicone covers for my keys. I love them. They protect the keys and keep them looking brand new. You have no fear of throwing the key around or dropping it on accident. Once the cover starts looking dingy, you can toss them and get new ones. I think I paid like $12 shipped on EBay. Totally worth it!

Those covers look good. How awkward is it to lock the door with them on?

They work perfectly with the covers. No issues at all. I was worried about the same thing at first, but they work perfect.

This is the same one I had. I don’t think the guy I got it from has an add up for one anymore.

Some more updates to the thread. I had been collecting pets over the winter to get this car closer to the look I wanted. First up was the wheels and tires. I decided to try switching from the 22’s I had ran on my E70, to an OEM set of 21” 612M’s. If any of you have been to Michigan, you will understand how terrible our roads are here. I mean they have potholes you can fall into at times. I obviously like the look of the 22’s on these cars better, but I was hoping to get a little more tire wall to save from wheel and tire expenses in the future. The other advantage is I get to run Michelin PSS’s, which is my absolute favorite tire. Here are the pictures of the wheels and tires at stock ride height.

I couldn’t stand the ride height, so next was lowering the car down and working on the stance. I chose to go with the H&R VTF adjustable springs for this build. I have seen a lot of positive reviews, and I wanted to retain my factory M-Dynamic suspension. At this time I decided to swap out the lower control arms for OEM BMW replacements. I also replaced the front sway links, added Motorsports Hardware 83mm wheel studs, and Motorsports Hardware tuner lugs in Neochrome finish. This was also the perfect time to add some 15mm front and 20mm rear spacers. As with many of my projects, I took the time to clean and dial in every part before it returned back into the car. After some playing around with the height settings, I decided to leave the car at 29.75” front, and 30.50” rear for now. Seems to be a good looking height without going too low and sacrificing too much ride quality.

I have been trying to get my car dialed in a little more lately after the long winter. It’s not warm enough here yet to do a full paint correction yet. I purchased the full Adam’s Ceramic Coating Kit, and as soon as the weather gets consistent it is going on. I decided to try out Adam’s new Ceramic Boost spray after washing my car. This stuff is pretty impressive!! It made the finish look much deeper and wet. I should have taken a 50/50 phot of the hood. You could clearly define where I had used it. I am even more motivated now to do a full correction and ceramic coating.

My next project is going to be to upgrade to the 50i brakes front and rear. I want to powdercoat the calipers and rotors before they are installed similar to my previous E60 M5. I am doing a lot of planning and research now, so when I get all the parts together, I can make it really special.

Sweet! How did your alignment turn out? How much negative camber?

The dealership didn’t give me the final settings. I will grab them when I swing through there next week. The alignment feels good. These wheels and tires tend to follow the ruts in the roads a bit, but I hear this is very common.

Beautiful F15! You should go over to the Facebook North American BMW Diesel Owners Group. Lots of good info on that group as well. Mainly M57 owners, but a few more N57 folks popping up on there. Lots of info on the ABC deletes and tunes if you have an interest in that sort of thing

I am not a Facebook member fortunately/unfortunately. Lol!! I may have to create an account to do some reading. I definitely am interested in doing the ABC delete.

Stance looks killer now!

A bit confused why you would debadge then add a front grill with "X5 M" badge?

The badge comes mounted in the OEM X5///M grills. I also have the OEM X5///M side vents, but I am wrapping them in gloss black also. I debadge every car I OEM to make washing and detailing the paint easier. I like the smooth clean look of the car without badging.

On a side note, does anybody make a X5///M style carbon fiber front bumper lip that fits on the Msport bumper? I like how the X5///M lip is flatter around the bottom, which gives it a lower more aggressive look. The stock Msport lip is curved and doesn’t look as aggressive to me. Unfortunately I don’t see many other options on the market so far.

I see well at least it's an OEM X5M grill and not aftermarket where you had the option of leaving the badge off. To each their own, but I hate seeing M badges on non-M cars.

I have a factory Msport package car, so it has ///M badges all over it stock anyway. Door sills, steering wheel, wheels etc. Like I said, the factory grills come with the badge already installed. I just didn’t take it off because my OEM X5///M wheels have them, the OEM X5 ///M side vents have them, and the grills also do. I know a lot of people that upgrade X5 ///M parts onto their cars. I can assure you I am not a punk kid who is trying to pose that I have a X5 ///M when I clearly don’t. I have owned about 10-12 ///M cars over the years. I chose to own the diesel X5 over the X5 ///M due to fuel economy and the third row option. I have 4 kids at this point, and my wife has an ESV Escalade. We need a lot of room to transport kids to sports and such. I currently own a M6, I have owned several M5’s (E28 M5, 2 x E34 M5’s, E60 M5), several M3’s (E36 M3, 3 x E46 M3’s, E90 M3), and my current M6. I guess at the end of the day I didn’t want to pay the premium for all of the factory OEM X5 ///M parts, then peel all the stickers and emblems off them to leave blank square recesses.
