Both key fobs not working

At a bit of a loss with this. Today my key fob stopped working after a battery warning for the last day. I have replaced the battery but it won’t lock/unlock the car. It will start the car if I put the fob to the steering wheel. This is the same for the spare which was working at the weekend. Any ideas what on earth is going on?

Start with replacing batteries in both fobs.

Was the battery warning for the vehicle's battery...or the battery for the remote/fob? And the battery you replaced...was it the vehicle's or the remote fob's battery? It's not clear to which it was the way the question was posed.

So yesterday the battery warning came up on the dashboard. Then about 2-3 hours later my fob wouldn’t work to open/ close the car but did work when putting to the neck of the steering wheel to start the car. I replaced the battery in the fob but it still doesn’t work and now the other fob doesn’t work. I’m going to try to get to the passenger well fuse box tonight to check the fuse. Any other ideas?

The vast majority - like 90+% - of electrical issues are caused by weak battery. Either charge, or replace it.

Well! It seems I’m an idiot! The two supposedly packaged new batteries in my drawer were duds! I bought two new ones this afternoon and all is working as it should be! Very very strange! Thanks for the help.

Duds, or is there a protective film on the bottom of the battery? Been there, done that...

ok, i registered just to echo this sentence.
Spent hours and hours debugging my issues and googling, long story short, it's still the battery!!!!!!!! FFS!!!!

Now long story, my car stopped working yesterday after a day of skiing.
First thing tried is swapping battery with my buddy's acura key, with my battery, his remote still works.
Then today take out the second key and still not working.
Then checked all fuses related to key (based on the diagram coming with the car), I didn't find the detailed descriptions for each fuse so I checked all of them.
Then used OBD scanner to read errors (Retrospectively this probably has nothing to do with electronics)
Finally gave up and was going to call the dealer. Last ditch of effort is to find if I have spare new battery on hand.
Found a circa 2012 battery that should have expired, and it worked.....

I dont really think i put the polarity wrong, since ..... i dont think it actually fit. but anyway, its the battery!!!!

Where are you guys getting your key fob replacement batteries? Batteries plus? Both of my key fogs are getting the low battery warning light.

Home Depot is also a good choice. Make sure it's an outlet that turns its inventory regularly. COSTCO is another good one. 2032 batteries are one of the most popular sizes now.

Yeah...it really is. Although I did see someone bring their remote into the service area to have them change the battery. I was stunned but kept my mouth shut and hopefully my eyes didn't buck to big!

So Im new to BMW, 2017 X5, key fobs barely worked, changed batteries, one worked awesome the other no good after battery replacement. Thanks to joining this site and reading the comments simply was able to reset the fob by the steering column reset and it works fine now. Thanks all.
