Here's my pic: Micro Minnie trailer, 5500lbs loaded with about 480 lbs on hitch.

Since it lifted my hitch end up been very low and dealer dropped in e2 sway control hitch. My 35d handled it well, i was doing 65-75 miles an hour constant uphill from Iowa to Colorado and I had my oil temp goes crazy so i mostly were holding about 70.

Towing 23 ft Boat with 2017 XDrive35i

I am looking to get a 20 - 23 foot boat. I have all wheel drive, but I don't have the diesel or V8 X5. Factory says up to 6000lbs.

I am just curious what the "real world" experience is with a XDrive35i when it comes to towing, launching, and pulling out at a boat ramp.

Boat - 2,500 - 3,500lbs tops
Fuel - 800lbs tops
Trailer for 23 ft boat - 1,000??

So 5,300lbs total??

Boat ramps do have algae and obviously an angle pointed towards the ocean so I'd love to hear your experiences prior to seeing if my X5 floats. Thanks in advance for your input.

I was towing 6600 lbs trailer from NC to NE once with my E70 X5 diesel that rated to 6000 as well. It was hard but doable. If you happen to happen air suspension that will greatly help for sure.
Recently I was taking trailer from IA to CO with steady incline from 1500 ft to 6500 ft, it was about 5K and my diesel (rated same 6000) did good job, except i uncovered hidden issue (clogged EGR cooler that leads to my engine runs very hot, almost to overheating point).
Sorry, not gas version but they seams like rated the same.

My 50i heats up quite a bit when I go uphill with my trailer too. It's probably a bit over 5500 lbs.

Appreciate the responses

That's interesting that the diesel has the same rating as the X35i of 6000lbs. I would have to imagine it is much better at towing than my gasser because of all the torque.

Any XDrive35i towers out there? Again thank you very much for the feedback. My confidence, as a towing newbie, is getting better reading your experiences.

Yep!! This thread gave me the confidence to get rid of the Ram 1500 Laramie I had and use the X5 as our only larger tow/ utility vehicle. It really does to well!

As an aside, these newer blind spot mirrors would be a huge help from Amazon! https:// http://www.amazon.com/Blind-Spot-Mir..._dp&th=1&psc=1

Ours also did not have a factory hitch so went stealth hitch and it really is a sweet piece!!

Passed on the X5 to a relative recently and picked up an M40i X3. Looking to have the stealth hitch installed soon. I only tow about 2,500 - 3,000 pounds in a little 12' trailer so hopefully it will tow respectably well with the M brakes like the X5 did!!

I had X35i and a BMS stage 1 tune. The added power was nice for light to moderate towing.

I tow a 24' Yamaha 242 Limited S with my 2017 X5 35D. Pulls the boat out great even on steep ramps. Definitely get some looks at the boat ramps from the guys with their oversized trucks and 17' fishing boats.

Tow rating is not based so much on the power of the engine, but the stopping power of the braking system and how well the chassis will handle the extra stress. This is why towing more than your rating is risky. It may pull it fine without much fuss, but should you need to stop fast or react to a situation that's where it's going to cause issues.

The trailer in his photo is a Featherlite 3110, likely in a 17'6" variant. I also own one. The tire rack is an add-on, looks like it may be a Trailex.

For controllers, I'm running a RedArc Tow Pro Liberty and have been quite happy with it. The harness is custom built to interface with the proprietary BMW 4 pin Amphenol connector. Fortunately Teknosha is now selling a pig tail for that.

Diesel Power!

I own a BMW X5 Twin Turbo diesel myself, I love diesels.
I know BMW is capable of towing massive loads, however nothing compares to the capability of a Volkwagen V10 TDI.
I know this thread is about BMW but I am excited about diesel power.

X5 could probably do that for a few feet too, to be fair. But the air suspension on the Touareg handled the insane load they put in it very well--that is something the X5 couldn't do. I almost bought a cayenne turbo instead of the F15 so I did a ton of research on the platform. Good trucks.

Thank you so much! A friend of mine actually gave me what I think is a Teknosha controller so I just need to get the pig tail to go with it as well as the OEM wiring harness.

One more question: which hitch did you go with?
