Second battery 50Ah coding and registering

The 92ah battery replacement can be easily registered and coded with ista, but I can't find anything on and if the second 50ah battery needs to be registered. I went to batteries and bulbs and they appear to have one that is 60ah/600cca which is marginally larger than the oem 50ah/570cca.

I assume it has to be registered and coded because there's an IBS attached to it, but I can't find how...

Below ia a picture of what I think would be a direct fit to the oem battery.

Help?

So it appears to be a group 47 size battery. I see cheaper options by Googling.

I'm not clear if it's the right size though, wish I had my measuring tape with me.
I measured mine and it's 7.5" x 6.5" x 6.5" whereas the one from batteriesplus in the picture is 9.5" x 6.8" x 7.5".
Besides, does it need coding and how?

As mentioned above...if it is connected to an IBS...then it probably does need coding.

How? I would look to the app or software/hardware that you have. It should give you some clues/instructions about the auxiliary battery and what it can do with/to it.

For example, if you were using an Autel MD808...you can see in the screen capture below where you would initiate registering the auxiliary battery:

That battery is 12v. I think the auxiliary battery is for having a certain option. I forget which.

You could have either a Lithium or AGM auxiliary battery depending on what model/engine/options you have.

But your app or software/hardware should hopefully identify what's installed and give instructions on how to register/code it when time comes to replace it.

Unfortunately the link they provide on battery registration has generic info about the process and doesn't differentiate between the two batteries.

There's another 3rd battery option mentioned on here recently.

I feel so silly, ista+ does have an option to register the aux battery, it's on the same service functions page but grayed out for some reason. (Maybe full diags need to be performed first)

Once I confirm fitment I will replace it.
Meanwhile I replaced the 92ah oem battery with a duracell agm h8 from batteries plus and noticed that my dealer had registered the oem as 90ah instead of 92ah so I did the same until I get an icom and program/retrofit to higher capacity.

It's official, the group 47 battery is not a good fit to replace the auxiliary battery, almost 2 inches longer (see attached side by side) I'll be returning it first thing on Monday, hopefully batteriesplus carry smaller sizes.

Update: the auxiliary 50ah battery is bmw proprietary, there are no aftermarket options available. The batteries plus guys were in disbelief about it too.

Nope, I gave up. I'll probably have to fork $300 for an oem one when the time comes. For now the battery seems to hold even in my wife's 2015 build. We did get the battery discharge message on both cars, but it never came back after we cleaned up the contacts of corrosion and after recharging them (these don't get tendered at the terminals in the engine compartment)
I did read somewhere that there's an option to buy one of the smaller batteries that batteriesplus sells and secure it by drilling some holes at different offsets to fit its size, but I'm not planning to butcher our cars

I find it hard to believe bmw had a special battery size built for the x5.
My local dealer quoted me $600 plus tax for both batteries. And that is with a discount.... They're a big dealer and don't even stock the smaller battery. Does nobody change it?

Was it ever determined if the smaller 50 AH/12v aux battery requires coding or not? I'm starting to think that it doesn't because it appears to be under the control of the PCU (power control unit).

And registering the battery is required when it is hooked up to an IBS (intelligent battery sensor...and I noticed in the parts database that there's only one IBS used on the F15...and that's on the larger (main) battery. And when using some of the software/apps for registering the battery...many find nothing for the aux battery or the info is grayed out for the aux battery...which would suggest that it isn't used for that particular battery.

If the car is optioned with the 48V aux battery...perhaps in that set-up...the aux battery requires registration.

Just tossing some thoughts out there in the stream to see where it goes.

Again, the parts database only lists an IBS for the larger main battery (item #1 in the diagram below for the battery & aux battery cable diagram). The diagram for the main battery has comments/notations about registering the battery...but the auxiliary battery diagram doesn't have any comments about registration.

The second battery appears to be an H4 agm battery. The only problem is I can't find anyone that sells an agm version. The measurements of the H4 battery seem identical to the oem battery.

There are plenty of H4 AGM batteries but the are all 10 inches long, while the BMW one is about 6-7 in long.

I think you're mistaken. Do a search.
