May be I misunderstood what you said but I don't think there is official BCI H4 battery size, lots of retailers post H4 batteries as for Subaru H4 engines and these do exist in AGM version. It seems like there is a smaller battery group called 47H which OP already tried (also mentioned online as 140R or 4H). I might be mistaken, what do you mean by 4H battery?

You can buy a lead acid h4 battery which is the same size as the bmw battery. But it's not agm.

Ahh...the H4 battery is a 140R class size...you can see it listed at the very bottom of the East Penn battery chart below.

It appears the H4/140R battery is the correct fit...the problem (like already mentioned) is finding the battery class size in an AGM version. Everyone seems to sell a regular (flooded) lead-acid version...hmm.

Ok. Came across a prius chat, and this battery was mentioned. It looks it'd work. Search for this ACDelcoŽ LN1AGM
Same dimensions and it's agm.

It appears that on the 40e...the entire car needs to be denenergized.

There is no coding required for the 2nd auxiliary batteries in our x5's. Only the main battery needs to be registered and coded when being replaced.

I bought the LN1 acdelco batter from rock auto. It works in my 40e. There is an adjustment tab to fit a longer battery, looks like the 40e might fit a group 47 / LN2 battery

Edrive not available and no stop start

Never post but wanted to share thanks for forum. I have 2016 X5 40e 50,000 miles also. Vehicle was not shutting off gas engine for a few months and the dealer is 500 miles away and. No warranty, so I wanted to fix it. I used the ACDelco LN1AGM auxiliary battery replacement as mentioned with success.

I did not deactivate the hybrid battery with the disable connector in the right side panel because I didn’t want to mess with recalibration of the steering. Swapped the battery and used ENET cable with ISTAD to register it. The 40e has the ability to register both of the non hybrid batteries. 120 miles driven…back to normal system operation.

I did the same thing 3 months ago. I disconnected the hybrid battery and left the main 12v connected. Didnt need to recalibrate anything or register the new auxbattery.

The battery needs to be registered upon replacement, but that is not the reason for not starting.
You need to use ISTA+ and enet cable or ICOM in order to see what is the culprit.

Unless I'm missing something (wouldn't be the first time)...didn't the forum members in posts #31, #33, & #34 say that they used the LN1 AGM battery?

I just got off of the phone with a tech from a BMW service garage called Bimmer PHD, with a name like that, they must know what they are talking about. He says the aux battery is an electric wheel chair battery. That would make sense if none of you can find it and only BMW stealers happen to have it. Cheeky bastards if it is true. Can anyone verify?

Did you see posts #25, #31, #33, #34, & #39 (where there's an actual pic of the AC Delco LN1 AGM battery from RockAuto.com's website)?

Here's more pics (from forum member stocktree) that compares the small BMW branded 50 AH aux battery vs the AC Delco branded LN1 AGM 50 AH battery:

Thank you, I see it now and am ordering one asap. I hope this fixes the issue. I'm just going to replace both batteries and have my local tech register them.
