Just makes me laugh when originally everyone was posting that dumb Porsche YouTube video about how they're bakes are so advanced that they resonance in the high quality material is always gonna squeal blah blah blah. Meanwhile BMW was just lazy and bought cheap pads from the 80s to his behind their brembo brake system. Doesn't surprise me given they still have a sliding single piston rear caliper even on carbon ceramic brakes.
Maybe we need an expert to chime in with a good replacement?

One of the things I found kinda funny is how BMW marketing materials refer to the the X5M/X6M as 'track monsters' and such. Then you talk to a service tech about the squeal and they say this is normal with such large racing brakes. Then you go to the manual which says the vehicle shouldn't be tracked due to the brakes being insufficient.

^^ Let's be reasonable. You cannot expect a brake pad optimized for a road driving to work properly on track. On the other hand, there is nothing wrong with BMW claiming an X5/X6M is track capable, particularly as the basics of the braking setup (discs, calipers, cooling) are sound, and all that would be required is a pad and fluid change to have some fun on a circuit.

Did, 2+ hours of highway and city driving in ambient temp of around 23c (dry). So far brake squeal is down 98%+....will report back regularly.
I’ve been complaining about the brake squeal for 2 years and have constantly been told that is “normal”. Thanks to this PuMA number, I now have a replacement set on the way from Germany! (15 days for delivery)

I’m hoping to see the same 98% noise reduction... I’ll report back!

My brakes squeals always after a good amount of driving. Should be normal with performance brakes.

There is no way that the squeal coming off my brakes was normal. I had pedestrians yell at me, I would always keep my windows up and eventually I resigned to not driving in the downtown core.

Sorry Not "necessarily" true. These brakes are not that special. Never had a speck of noise from my AMG with 6/4 pot brembos and 2 piece rotors. It's a poor design on BMWs part. Just look at the puma and what it calls for to fix the problem.

Hey gents, just FYI have about 20k miles on my truck and the squeal was getting crazy, brought into dealer and they installed new pads and gave me a 300 mile no hard braking guideline, so far after 100+ miles I haven't heard a squeal once will keep you updated

Has anyone installed anything but OEM pads on the fronts? I know it's very limited in fact I've only been able to find "centric posi quiet" for the fronts. Obviously tons of options for the rears since they're the same as so many platforms.

You likely have a pre mid 2017 build. BMW has a PuMA for the replacement of all front wear components to a new type.

Has anyone actually seen new part numbers for this? All the puma says is to sand down the rotors and chamfer the pads

Your comment is in line with what I have been thinking - clean / sand / chamfer is the totality of the fix?????

There were "new parts" required from Germany but no specifics.

BMW corporate speak snake oil or something more substantive?

They ordered all new wear parts for the front brakes. It took two weeks for them to come from Germany.

When they arrived and went to install them, they realized I already had this new version (apparently my build was right near the changeover). So, they didn't use the new parts but instead sanded, lubed and chamfered.

I wish you coulda at least seen the pads to know if they actually come chamfered or not. I'd like to know if they're chamfering them more or actually for the first time.

Mine is early ‘17 build, so I should be eligible for all new parts. Although, my SA didn’t know exactly what the repair kit included. It is fronts only, correct?

Have you noticed any reduction in stopping power along with the reduction in noise?

Mine is now 4 months old, has 2500 miles on it and squeals like mad. Not had that on any car before either.

It did not do it when I had the 1200 miles service as otherwise I would have added that to the items to check, but started around the 2000 miles. Very annoying.

Fronts only, yes.

I'm not sure I'd notice stopping power.

dorian - I think the question we are trying to sort out is what "new parts" mean. Are they simply the same old part but "new" out of the box or are they a redesigned part to eliminate the squeal?

The way it was explained to me is that it is all new front wear components for all X5M and X6M before a certain build date (sometime past summer '17). I was specifically told it had to include all wear components as my current ones would already be matching due to scoring and such.

When the parts arrived and they were to put them on, they realized I already had this 'redesign'....which is hilarious as my brakes were so loud I wouldn't drive in the downtown core as it was so embarrassing. People would actually yell at me.

So, mine got the chamfer, sand, lube only. That immediately reduced noise by 99%. A week later only 95%, month maybe 80%. Essentially the trend is they get louder by the week.

That's depressing for sure. I'd love to see someone give a different lad a go and see if there's any difference. There's gotta be someone with a F85/86 running other than oem pads.

Well I would think my 2018 X5M with a 6/21/18 production date would have the latest and greatest, but my brakes began to squeal a few days after delivery. My wife is already asking about the X3M
