I like that this gen definitely looks much more distinct from the regular Golf and GTI. The MK7 R is a bit understated, which I sometimes like, but sometimes I wish I didn't have to look twice to see whether that's an R in the distance. I just hope they don't go too far in this direction and end up like a Civic Type R that just screams at first sight.

There isn't any practical place for them to stuff an adult sized wing on it so it's already guaranteed to be more discreet.

I like that they’re subtle looking. They’re a little expensive relative to the GTi, which is arguably more fun, but I get wanting all wheel drive too. Here in Seattle the ground is wet most of the time and I’m sure a gti has tons of wheel spin with all that torque. Ultimately even the R is a little soft core for me at the end of the day, but I see the appeal.

That subtle look is part of the draw for me. Picked up this lightly used "R" in July and have quickly become a fan. It does so many things well...a true joy to play with.

You can argue that the MK7 was the perfect automobile for everyone in all climates and one of the best all around vehicles ever made. Sensible enough to be a solid grocery getter for people that only care about A to B transportation and more than enough enough performance capability for all but the most hardcore of drivers. This new model looks like more of an evolution of the MK7 and really it's nearly the same car outside of the interior styling as the average person won't even know an MK7 form an MK8 by looking at them from the outside as they look nearly the same outside of some minor front end styling cues.

"Power will still be supplied by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, albeit with new features, such as variable valve timing with dual camshaft adjustment and water-cooled exhaust gas that routes to the turbo in the cylinder head."

Not up on the turbo jargon but it sounds like the turbo in the cylinder head and isn't that a bad idea?

Also not a fan of the front end.. or the ipads..

Happy with the 7 / 7.5 for an all rounder, more spacious than my e90 sedan.

  • No reasonably equipped A35 will go for 45k. AMG is not interested in competing on price.
  • STIs are very long in the tooth, but hoping for an update there as well. I owned a GR in 2012, and while the performance was great, refinement and livability was pretty poor.
  • Same can be said for Type R as well. Bonkers performance, but kind of hard to live with. Not to mention that Honda dealers have been quite greedy in squeezing customers on them.
  • Haven't heard anything about the new S3, but the outgoing gen was a lot less special of a car to drive compared to the R. RS3 is a different story and price point.
  • Focus RS was a legit competitor, but it's no longer an option.

Today I saw pricing on the Yaris GR in England. it’s priced the same as a GT86 and a Camry hybrid, both $30k cars in the US. That would be a 268 hp, AWD 6MT hatchback that’s a size smaller than anything on the market. It weighs 2800lbs and splits its torque 30/70 f/r in sport mode, with selectable 50/50 and 60/40 options.

Wish we got that car here, that would definitely be my choice of hot hatch.

Pointless without the manual. The VW GTI / R had one of the highest take rates on manual (behind the Miata).

There is no more AMG, it is a trim package. Mercedes would put it on a scooter if they could charge a little more for it.
Same with M on BMW and S on Audi.

That's one thing I like about RS for Audi...there is no "RS Line" packages available. It's either RS or it's not.
