Lightbulb N63 Oil-Consumption Litigation Update 2020

Being the current owner of not one, but two BMW V8s, I still follow this story and any updates thereof. My current F0 had its engine replaced by BMW last Summer. So far so good. But I agree that a complete new engine design is long overdue.

How does one get involved in this or get it fixed? Seems like there isn't a N63tu Customer care package available?

Mine just started knocking so I'm interested in this too. What were the symptoms when your engine went out?

My 2014 50i burns some oil , usually get about 2700-3000 miles before it asks for 2 quarts but my last time it was 2,000 miles and it needed 2 quarts again. I know BMW said that 1 quart every 750 miles is fine , but not in my book. I guess I’m going to have to monitor my consumption closely and see if the mileage continues to go down between top offs. Though I would be curious if people who got new n63tu engines had the same oil consumption issues once there engine was replaced.

I'm at 100k on my 50i and I hardly use any oil between my 6k changes. I use Rotella T6.

I noticed my MPG went down approx 1.5mpg between 100K and 150K. Here is what the inside of of a N63 looks like after 40,000 miles of burning a quart every 1000-1200 miles....(starting burning oil around 110K, put an additional 40K on it for 150K total before taking it down to do valve guide seals) I ended up pulling the heads so I could lap the valves when I noticed the exhaust valves were pitted pretty bad, carbon buildup from leaky valve guide seals can be a factor in this so I highly recommend having your valve guide seals replaced sooner then later and not driving for so long like I did.

They do clean up nicely though =)

I’m using the bmw oem 0w30 or 5w30 which I have heard people say is Rotella which is made by Shell, but I don’t know that for a fact.

This experience was with an N63 (E70), not N63TU (F15) correct?

Correct, however while the TU did some great updates to the original N63, it still is subject to the excessive heat saturation that all hot-vee setups are prone to compounded by BMW still runs the entire platform extremely hot (oil at water temps at 220F+)

And out of all the of the parts they updated, believe or not the valve seals were NOT. The N63 and TU share the same part number for the valve seals.

The thermal management is better and the intake manifold design allows the the engine valve covers to breath more on the TU and not keep so much heath built-up inside, however you will find many TU's will suffer the same fate as the original N63, just on a little longer time line.

Here is a new class action lawsuit taking shape on the TU: https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2...-lawsuit.shtml

Yep! Cleaned up pretty well but barely in spec I had to remove so much to get them acceptable.

I decided not to do new valves and seats as it would have cost close to 2K just in parts and machining, for 3100 I get can an entire new N63 as they are discounted now so going to run this one as long as I can then after Its done (Maybe sooner then later, ESS tune and JB4 are about to go in). Leakdown tests had everything 12% or less after, pretty nice for an engine with 150K on it and original pistons/rings.
