New 2016 X5M Owner / DIYer Oil Change

All,

I have had a 1997 e39 540 sport for over 20 years 270k on it still have it. Just bought 2016 X5M and looking to do an oil change. Any posts tools needed on it? Also owners here do the oil changes more often then the maintenance reminder?

Thanks,
Frank

Congrats on your new ride, enjoy! As far as tools needed, nothing out of the ordinary really, just a 86mm oil filter wrench cap tool and a 8mm allen wrench for the oil drain plug. Newtis is a great help for the DIY'er: https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f...nce/1VnYVtzYX0

Also great for the DIY'er, is to use FCP Euro, which offers free lifetime oil changes:

Havent looked at mine specifically, but looking at the pic, does it use the same 32mm nut on top? If the OP changed the oil on a e39, he should have all of the tools necessary.

No, ours does not have a nut. It's smooth.

I think I used this one that I bought from the dealer. It doesn't list our car or engine, but it was a perfect fit on the filter cap.

Ditto Kraftwerk...BMW changed things up...the oil filter cap doesn’t have the 32mm thingy to help remove it.

As mentioned earlier on...you’ll need a removal tool that fits over it. Some of those tools may have a stub to fit a socket over...and some will have a hex or torx opening to insert a bit to help remove it...but the cap itself is smooth with flutes around the circumference that helps facilitate its removal:
