The is a 2014 x5 35d new to me with 38,000 have owned many diesels over the years. I’m just curious if any other owners have noticed a diesel exhaust smell in front of car or while in traffic ?

Take it to the dealer and have them check the valve cover breather hose.
The cabin air intake is up under the hood and it is likely that it is pulling in fumes from a cracked, loose or disconnected breather hose. See the following thread for similar issue with fix: Click Me |

UK 2014 40d with 70k Miles that I've owned since 2016. Never had any hint of diesel or any exhaust smells under any conditions. I fear there's something amiss with yours that needs checking out

The only time ever i had this was a few days before the egr cooler cracked. Have you had yours replaced under recall?

i had no symptoms bar poor mpg and a diesely exhaust exhaust smell in the cabin coming from air con area. One day i switched to sport mode with gear lever into sports shifter and gave it a rip soon the drivetrain warning came on and car stalled due to cracked egr. Im not saying you should do the same. |

Dealer
[QUOTE=KRS_SN;25706615]https://www.consumerreports.org/car-...for-fire-risk/
r u sure?[/QUOTE I did take it back to dealer and they said could smell diesel exhaust in engine area .Should not be smelling fumes the shop Forman said . I am going to call bmw again ask them to replace cooler and egr module and intake manifold per bmw recall . Dealer said befor if not leaking they do not replace . I disagree with if there is a recall it should be done Last edited by swainbmw; 01-20-2020 at 11:12 PM.. |

EGR replacement was not dependent on discovering a leak, but the recall did not replace all EGR coolers.
They did a visual inspection to determine if the cooler was one of the affected batch and if it was they replaced it irrespective of condition. If the cooler wasn't from the affected batch, then no replacement. The issue was that a certain batch, fitted to some vehicles over a certain period, were at risk of leaking, which then caused risk of fire. Any dealer should be able to inspect the car and tell you if your vehicle is affected. |

2014 x5 diesel
Im pretty sure thats an affected batch. Bulletproof and excellent car and engine but emissions regulations mean they had to hastily put in a crappy egr system. They all have faulty egr coolers which are likely to break.(I think the coolers from 2016 are supposedly defect free) so bmw inspects them and if they look ok they discharge their duty of care and say look we inspected them they look ok But they might break 2 months later and bmw say 'not our problem ' we discharged our duty of care. You have some symptoms exhaust smell in cabin and in engine bay It may or may not be a faulty egr cooler but if it is and bmw do nothing tell them you are worried car will stall in the highway or catch fire and both of these are hazards. Be polite and stress on the rosk to yourself and family. They checked my egr cooler with an endoscope after waiting 2hrs for engine to cool down. If your car is in an affected batch has it had this work done? best wishes. |

forgot to add bmw may impound the car until egr cooler is available if it is not in stock and unless you have an extended warranty are not obliged to give you a courtesy car.

Pleased to hear your problem has been resolved.
For anyone visiting this post, EGR Coolers came from a number of suppliers. The recall inspection determines which cooler is fitted to your vehicle. If it's from a specific supplier(s), they replace it, regardless of condition. 60-70% of vehicles subject to the recall have the suspect cooler. Details from relatives who is BMW mechanic working in a dealership. In UK at least, they'll provide you with a courtesy car during recall work even if your vehicle is out of warranty. My X5 was out of warranty when inspected, parts were on back order and they wouldn't release my car, but they did give me a new 6 Series with only 500 miles on the clock. Had the loaner for 3 weeks |

Glad they finally zeroed in on valve cover breather hose. The cracks they can develop are easily overlooked, but your symptoms should have clued in the techs. The breather hose is on the same side as the intake for the cabin.

Egr
After breather valve hose replaced ,and retested with smoke test another leak was found and it was the egr cooler this time . What the chances that the oil cooler needs replaced? Or the intake manifold needing cleaned ? Or replaced ?
