TRANSMISSION REPLACED under warrant, X5M F85 2015 highly likely transmission failure!

for three weeks i have been having very harsh shifting (downshift) from 3-2 in automatic mode, sport mode, coasting, braking etc.

went out with bmw master tech, he said it sounds mechanical related, booked for the 22nd of this month, more to follow. he did say this does not sound like a software or relearn issue, nor does it sound like a transfer case issue with softer winter tires, he said it is shifting "harsh" and that it is not normal at all.

2015, 2nd owner, have had it for about 36000km, got it with 30k on it. just fyi. i do not drive this vehicle hard at all, i have done zero launch control on it since i own it.

this truck, with the many issues i have had, has been the worst bimmer in my fleet as of now.

harsh downshifting from 3-2, seems to slam and not rev match road and engine speed.

more to come.

UPDATE: in for service PUMA case open yesterday will see where this goes

UPDATE 2: how i replicated the problem:

find a low slope upwards, like a 3% grade hill, put it in automatic, drive at constant speed with your tranny in setting "2" (not in gear 2 but transmission setting/profile aggressiveness 2 where you have two bars on the dash under the tranny speed gear) , keep accelerating till you get to 3rd gear then back off a bit, keep climbing the hill as you slow down, do not take your foot off the accelerator, eventually it will shift down from 3 to 2 as your foot is still on the accelerator (no coasting) , that is where to slam forward, coffee flying happens, it sounds like a mechanical jolt either at the back end of the motor or in the tranny itself under the console.

as well on highway, driving at a speed where your car can shift from 6 to 7th gear, you will feel a shudder, judder on the rear driveline as it goes from 6 to 7

as me questions if you are not sure, cause it could be serious mechanical issue. i will answer as much as i can. i don't really check pm so just ask.

LAST UPDATE: transmission arrived from germany, had it replaced this week, picking up later tonight., whole new transmission and torque converter etc. All under warranty.

UPDATE 2020, JUNE 11 2020: So based on the info that i had, which is the harsh shift downwards from gear 3 to 2 and the slight slip in gear 6 to 7 upwards, if you have these issues with your x5m f85 your tranny is going to fail. ave it looked at. islandman's recount is exactly as mine and i had another member message me the exact same scenario looking for suggestion. Basically three people with the exact same symptoms. I am actually trying to see if any of us were doing repeated launch controls on it. I am currently at 100,000km on the truck and probably put about 19,000km on the new tranny from feb 2019.

Why did you get a trans case for? What issues did you have?

i think he meant opened a case with bmw for a new transmission. you have one coming from germany on back order?

or do you mean a transfer case?

as well what symptoms did you have in order to make you bring it in for a transmission check?

the transmission was diagnosed as failed, PUMA case issued an order for new transmission from germany, it was replaced and picking up later today. will update.

this was replaced under warranty, issue started at 65000km, bad downshifting from 3-2, felt like car was slamming into gear.

Yes the transmission was replaced. the car also had the software flashed to latest version. There does not seem to be any issue now. The bad shifting and slipping is no longer present.

The replacement of the tranny was booked as 0.75hr work on the invoice plus the addition of the appropriate amount of fluid.

I had them look over the u joints, drivelines, transfer case etc, just in case any other damage was caused due to the jolting driveline in shift pattern. There were no other issues reported.

If you have questions please ask.

They replaced your trans in 45 minutes? Wow, you sure that isn't just the labor time for the software update? Or is that their way of booking the warranty work?

Id assume more like a full 8-12 hours for a trans swap, no?

I have been having the same issues as hinton, hard jerking downshift 3 to 2 and a slight jerk upshift 6 to 7.
The problem is I bought the car (2015 X6M) in Miami and exported it to Jamaica. Our BMW dealer said once it leaves the USA the warranty is void.
I am going to try to change the solenoids in the valve body and see if that solves the problem.
I already did a reset of the adaptations and a relearn but the problem persisted.

Wonder if you drain the fluid already?
I'd check for fluid if it's low, has excessive metal shaving, if all look good maybe the solenoids are bad. Valve body is hardly clogged for low mileage so not sure replacing it would help. BTW, the sleeve connector is known to leak on most ZF trans, so your fluid maybe very low at the moment, worth to check.

In any rate, I'd consult a ZF specialist shop; dealer would only diagnose then just put the entire rebuilt trans in, all of it including the torque converter(TC). Usually the TC is the one goes bad, it's very rare the clutch pack goes bad.

In any rate, I am planning to flush my trans, bought a CPO @33K miles right now. on mine, it seems very gritty on cold which goes away after warm up. The car is fine, take off responsively, no noise etc. but just pre-caution and also I want to see if the fluid is low, not burnt or has metal shaving in it anyway.

Car has 56000 miles. I changed the trans filter and fluid already. I used only original equipment. There was no metal shavings and the fluid looked fine, not burnt at all.
We don't have any ZF speciality shops in Jamaica. I did buy the original ZF sleeve connector which I'm going to replace when I change the solenoids.
I am hoping this solves my problem!

UPDATE
I bought a used valve body from a 2016 X5M and changed the solenoids. Did an adaptation reset however the problem persisted.
I'm now planning to buy a used transmission and install it.

1700 pounds with shipping from UK to Jamaica.
18000 miles on tranny.
its from a RHD 2016 X5M. My car is LHD.
VIN checked and they said it will fit.
waiting to finalize deal with seller.
The shifting is so hard that the car is basically not drivable!
