Does this mean 50i's can't use a VSC-1? ECS tuning website states it's compatible.

Since the 50i DOES NOT have the valve then one could surmise that a valve control also won't work.

Yeah, that would make sense. So if the 50i has no valve is it always open? I don't understand how cold starts are so much louder, seems like that would be an open valve and then it shuts.

if not equipped with an actuated flap then no piece hardware can control what does not exist. ac schnitzer makes a sound module that will "improve" the sound of the stock exhaust. it is mainly used on diesel vehicles in europe but if you're looking for some sort of sound improvement without making any real changes to an exhaust then this may be the device for you.

There is a valve being held open. The biggest reason why the cold start is louder at start up is the wastegates being held open to help warm up the cats.

These engines run rich by dumping more fuel for about 10-20 seconds on cold starts to warm up the CATs quicker for emissions reduction.

In regards to your exhaust, you have a few options:
  1. Replace your exhaust with an aftermarket exhaust system (Most Costly)
  2. Electronic Exhaust Cut Outs - Like what thatsjustice did here: https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1140247
  3. Muffler Delete - This is what quite a few of us did here with great results and minimal cost: https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1442262
  4. Muffler swap like Feelin Nauti and mikew2069 did here: https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...6#post23963316

Thank you very much for these links...I had not seen that last one that focuses on the muffler swap but I did see that as an option in the muffler delete thread. I'm liking what I saw/heard on the muffler swap, a nice increase from stock but not over the top. I wish someone in Seattle had this done so I could hear in person.

I believe mikew2069 also has sound clips with a decible meter of the difference. I haven't heard it in person though, yet.

Personally, I don't think the muffler delete is loud, nor does my wife. My neighbors stock V8 Ford F-150 is not that much quieter.

It doesn't sound raspy on the 50i. Shouldn't too raspy on the 35i either but that is just speculation on my part.

Maybe an x-pipe like we used in the 50i could also be used here?

Can't do an x pipe with out dual exhaust. And you don't get dual exhaust from an in-line
