"Trigger Sent" iDrive - Pop-Quiz for BMW Gurus/Geeks

Pop-Quiz just for fun...

Can you identify why my BMW iDrive just displayed this pop-up message in the split-screen?

Is this similar to dropping a pin or is there more to it? What exactly are they trying to accomplish with this feature?

The IFTTT (If This Then That) compatible BMW Labs IFTTT widget enables your BMW to trigger actions within internet connected services and applications.

When my BMW X5M enters a large radius geo-fence around my house, my BMW sends a message to my house thermostat to cool my house in advance so my house is cool when I arrive, which is not always the same time of day.

When my BMW enters a much smaller geo-fence radius around my house:
- my BMW tells my garage door to open,
- tells the deadbolt to the house door to unlock,
- tells my house alarm system to disarm,
- turns on my house music sound system,
- then it triggers an automated SMS/text message to my wife to say I am at home now,
- and if after "sunset", my BMW tells certain "smart" lights in my house entry-way/mudroom to turn on,

...all right before I pull into my garage and step out of my BMW.

(When I leave the house, my BMW triggers something similar to happen in reverse.)

When I arrive into the house, I can then ask "Alexa" (Amazon Echo) to "close the garage door" for me, and if I forget to, the garage door will close itself at 9:00PM, ask Alexa to "dim the lights to 60%", "place my Domino's Easy Order" delivered pizza", and "Alexa, ask StubHub what’s happening this weekend"

I am very impressed that BMW is being so "cutting/bleeding" edge with their BMW Labs IFTTT Widget and amazed at how well my BMW now integrates into an overall "Life Automation" scheme/design.

That is pretty sweet. Hopefully nobody steals your car (valet) and decides to drive to your house while they know your away. I honestly didn't know you could do half that stuff.

That is pretty sweet feature. Is it subscription based like other BMW services?
And is it available in the states?

Valid point. I have since switched the unlocking of the doors/deadbolt away from BMW trigger and the deadbolt now automatically detects my presence via bluetooth on my smartphone to use an encrypted key handshake before unbolting/unlocking the door. This enables me to give out unique digital keys (install of smartphone app required) to people that need temporary or permanent access to our home (kids/friends/neighbors) but also gives me the ability to revoke their unique digital key access at any time.

Even in this unlikely scenario to rob my house, a thief would have to steal my car AND my smartphone, and most importantly, finish the robbery BEFORE I notice my BMW and smartphone are missing. I am rarely separated from either for long, and I am panicked when I momentarily misplace either one, even for a second. Should this unlikely scenario occur, I would then use another BMW service, BMW Assist, to locate my stolen vehicle and have the police meet them ahead of time at my house (or whatever their destination).

I also have the security system send me a text message each time the security system is armed and disarmed, as an additional fail-safe to confirm the security system status.

The BMW Labs IFTTT Widget is free, but requires you to activate a BMW ConnectedDrive account.

I think newer BMW's come with BMW ConnectedDrive and BMW Assist at no cost for the first four years, not sure though.

Availability is most countries, including the US.

Interesting and impressive in theory... hopefully it works in the real world and the proper security measures are in place for unauthorized individuals not gaining access to essentially every material item you own.

Only available in the US right now. When you install the connected drive app it authenticates you with your VIN so unless you have a valid US vin it's a no go.
Maybe they are quasi-testing still.

You could be right but I also don't see Canada on the currently supported country list. With BMW Canada selling more cars last year than they ever have there, why Canada isn't already supported is a surprise.

They list a set of countries as working on the BMW Labs page for IFTTT, and even list Finland, Denmark, and Sweden as "New!" support.

https://labs.bmw.com/

It does also list these requirements:
Vehicle requirements:

BMW vehicles built between 07-2013 and 10-2015 (excl. 2015 7series)
Vehicle equipped with active ConnectedDrive Services (SA6AK)
BMW ConnectedDrive Account with mapped vehicle, register/login ConnectedDrive page
Vehicle equipped with Navigation Professional (SA609: NBT and NBT Evo)
BMW Labs Widget active in splitscreen of car’s control display

It looks like you must first have ConnectedDrive Service SA6AK, plus Nav Professional SA609 options, and you must also have registered/activated your VIN with an online BMW ConnectDrive account.

I got the invite a while back to be a beta tester as well. The lack of widgets I'd actually use were slim so I didn't bother with it. Def didn't want to use the garageio widget. Don't need that level of automation in lieu of unwanted openings if I just drive by to get the mail, etc.

So this is a beta invite only right now? Or is it live?
I can't seem to find this app on my phone or on connected drive.

I was also invited to join a while back. I don't remember when it was but it seems like it's been awhile now... at least a few months, maybe 6 months. Works great. I have several things linked through IFTTT; Ecobee thermostat, iSmart Alarm system and Philips Hue lighting. It works great. The location service actually works better than the same service through my iPhone. It acts quicker, more accurately and is generally more reliable. Only thing I don't like about it is that it does not work in the background. In other words, it has to be selected and showing on the iDrive screen for it work, so it is taking up real estate that I would like to use for other things, but I generally leave it up there and it works well.

This looks like an interesting feature. I have an active connected drive account and my X5 has all of the requirements. I just loaded the IFTTT application on my iPhone and will give it a try when I head home tonight. The garage opener feature is neat but the black box required to operate it for two garage doors is about $209 on Amazon. Not sure it is worth that cost since all I have to do is press the garage door button on my rear view mirror. Nevertheless, it seems to have some interesting features so I will give it a try.

No, that is not the one. Attached is a screen shot of the application in the iPhone app store of what I downloaded on my iPhone. However, it looks like the application in your post regarding the location triggers might be the better application or at least it might be able to do more than the one I downloaded. Last night on my way home I opened the split screen (which I usually do not do) and the "recipes" were listed. It popped up a couple of notifications on news stories in which I might be interested that I selected from National Pubic Radio (NPR) [I should have taken a picture of this so everyone can see it - I'll try to do that tonight on my way home].

To be honest, I don't think I am doing this right because I don't know what to do with the notifications. What I was hoping to do was to be able to play those stories by triggering them from my iDrive controller rather than retrieving them using my iPhone. I would be interested to hear how others are using this. Perhaps there are other useful features that many of us could use and enjoy.
