Yes for the X5M, once you go M you can't go back. Living in SC, love supporting the Upstate with always having 1 X vehicle in the stable. I have progressed up from 2 X3's, then 1 X5 to X5M. Talking about big, that's the X7- no thank you.

Yep. I think they're going after the GLS on this one which feels very disconnected and floaty unless it is in 550amg or 63 form then it is a bit more dialed in and stiffened up.

I have had my 2017 since May, and currently have just over 10,000 miles.
I bought it, I have had leases in the past but preferred to own this one. I have no intention of replacing anytime soon-I may put over 60K before I do. Fortunately no issues (minor interior trim noises, the dealer has been quite helpful). I drive every day, to work, to hockey games, anywhere. I still smile EVERY time I get in and start it up-the visceral reward is impossible to quantify. I keep thinking that I will modify at some point, but I am not in a rush. The stock setup is nearly perfect in my opinion. Previous 2 rides were 2014 Audi SQ5 and 2011 BMW 550, and neither were as satisfying to own or drive (the 550 was closer, must be a BMW thing). To summarize, I would make the same choice again today given what I know now. Order/find one for yourself, now. |

I think my next go around I'll probably replace my C63 with a M5 CP when that comes out and a regular X5 35i in the new body when my lease is up on the X5M. If I was to just have one vehicle though I might stay with a X5M.

Hey guys,
Some great insights here. Seems like you guys really like this car. Any counterpoints? Common issues with this platform or this particular powerplant? Quality control issues? I currently own a 2009 E92 M3 which I have owned since 2010. Before that, I had a 2003 E46 M3 Cabriolet, E46 2002 330Ci Coupe, 2000 Z3M Roadster and 1998 540i. I currently daily drive a 2012 W212 Mercedes Benz E63 AMG Wagon which I love. However, it being 6 years old, I'm wary of the maintenance issues moving forward. Like many of you, I am not opposed to getting an updated version of a car I already have. Unfortunately, the deal I got on my 2012 in 2015 is not going to happen on a 2015 in 2018. Primarily, I think, because the 2014 and newer W212 E63 AMG models were equipped with AWD and the older W212s (Pre LCI) were RWD. So a 2015 AMG E63S is a little bit out of my price range. I was looking at a 2016 S7 but am not sure I can handle the downgrade from a full blown AMG to and Audi S car (Would prefer the RS7 but again, the relative price difference is prohibitive). Recently, the X5M came up on my radar. I have traditionally been a car guy. SUVs were never really my thing. However, the X5M being a full bore M Vehicle will satisfy my car snob side. One of my concerns is the height. I know everybody drives SUVs because they love the ride height and the commanding view of the road. My concern is more the physical dimensions of the vehicle. As I am sure many of you do, I live a pretty active lifestyle which includes skiing. On my E63, I had a really nice low profile Thule Roof Box on a low profile Whispbar roof rack. This setup made for a vehicle that was lower than a standard X5. So, even with the box attached for 4 months, I could still park my car in the garage and enter any underground parking facility without worrying about not clearing the roof or the door. For those of you who ski, do you have any issues with the aforementioned situations? Taking the box off and on is not an option as it is hard enough to put it on and take it off the station wagon. I would imagine, it will be even more difficult on the X5. Thanks guys. Any help would be appreciated. DrC

For what it's worth I may be pulling my deposit on a new Range Rover and get into a 2018 X5M. I do not think I am willing to be LR's guinea pig at this time and feel the tech and luxury offered on the F85 is ideal for me and my application. I just hope buying a 2018 at the end of a life cycle isn't going to give me a huge beating on the back end when the new X5M becomes available.

ABSOLUTELY. After having an '11 for 5 years I had to get another. I'm currently nearing the end of the lease on a '16, and trying to figure out what to do next. I don't usually lease, and know I'll blow past my mileage allowance (and will buy more miles at discount before turn in), but I was considering either buying this one at lease end, leasing a new one, or buying a new one. Buying this one is the most attractive option because I really want to buy the next gen, and this will buy me the time until then. I hate the mileage restrictions that come with leasing, but I did it this time because I thought I'd be ready for a newer version at the end of this year.
The downside? Mine was just flat bedded away by the dealer for a weird electrical glitch (blinking dash, increased steering effort warning) that has me concerned about hanging on to these beasts anything longer than a few years. The trouble is, once you go M, it spoils you for anything else. I started with an M3 in 97 and that was it for me. Then the racing bug bit me....so sluggish cars just make me twitchy. |

I have 32k miles on my '17 with zero issues, and I am extremely happy with it, especially after I replaced the Dinan tune with a proper ECU tune. There's really nothing else that compares that I'm interested in, so I'll hang on to it for a while.

17k miles here and I am thinking seriously about just buying my lease out. I was worried about the s63 engine with previous gen issues, but so far it seems like the kinks are worked out and not many people are reporting issues at higher mileages.

I have a 2015 Donington Grey with MR interior. Lease is up in a few weeks and I have a 2018 Azurite Black Metallic with MR red waiting for me at the dealer. So yes, I'm in for #2, no reservations. I wouldn't bet against leasing a 2020 F95 next round either, but you never know what will be available in another 3 years

The only cars I would consider replacing the X5M with are
1. Ranger Rover Sport SVR - I previously had a 15 RRS v8 Dynamic and loved everything visual and performance on that truck (exterior, engine note, suspension). Problem was everything electronic was terrible. Plus, the SVR is ~$30k more than the X5M for worse power, worse electronics, worse brakes. Just not sure. 2. Porsche Panamera Turbo - Love everything about this vehicle. Exterior looks are great, electronics are top notch (mostly Audi sourced), performance bits are top shelf. Problem is shelling out an extra $50k over the X5M just for the base model. Comparatively equipped looking at ~$70k more. For that money I could have an X5M and a well equipped M4 or TT RS. 3. Porsche Cayenne Turbo - See #2 4. Lamborghini Urus - Would be a dream but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ The only real contender is the RRS SVR in my opinion when you factor in money for comparable package. I supposed I would consider switching to a car, and if I did, it would be an M5 or E63 AMG S. EDIT: This all goes out the window if Audi ever brings the US the RS6 Avant. I've wanted that car since the old A6 based Allroad.

If the X5M was discontinued, I would daily the new M5. I’ve had mine for 2 weeks and have put 600 miles on it. 1000 lbs lighter and at least 50 more horsepower. Front seat comfort is equal. Visibility is equal. Handling is slightly better but they are close. Parking is equal. Slightly stiffer suspension in comfort mode. About 3mpg better. X5M kills it in rear storage. I could make the M5 rear storage “work” as a daily, but the back seat would have to be used. Just can not beat the X5M as a Nuclear Option.

WOW! I had no idea the residuals are that bad for RS cars. I figured they would hold value similar to M cars. $700 more a month for a lease puts that into Porsche territory.

low mileage 2014 RS7 Prestige sell for more than 2016 X5M; lease wise it may be a crappy proposition but if you own it then it may be a better one.

Can't argue with you on the electronics, at least by reputation! Surprised you didn't mention the X5M's handling advantage (no comparison there). |
