California is all about "feel-good" laws. There's so many laws that go off of correlation rather than causation and just make people feel like they're doing something but really doesn't attack the root cause

Personally I'm a little concerned with socialism growing in North America. It's not only California as we are seeing a shift in Canada as well with our socialist Prime Minister. We went away from monarchies so the masses could have freedom and we are going full circle into willingly giving up our freedoms to the government.

Would you know if the way that sound is measured at Laguna Seca equivalent to how sound is measured when they assess an exhaust for a ticket?

Most definitely it is not. They have a sound booth at Turn 5 and cars are under load and could possible go through the full RPM range.

The standards for sound limit testing for street legality is a steady-state SAE J1168 standard procedure where the car is stationary.

This new California law is beautiful - you are guilty unless you can prove you are innocent. Sounds like communism to me.

It's 95, at least I can tell you definitively this is what they test for. This is from my state referee test document.

I, for one, agree with the State. Economists talk about "externalities" -- costs that are passed on to others.

Loud exhaust systems in cities is exactly that. The owner enjoys his noise and passes it on to everyone else who most likely doesn't enjoy it.

It's pretty straight forward to be honest, have mufflers, don't be obnoxiously loud. If you're above 95db, you are a douche plain and simple. Test pipes/catless and stock exhaust has always been the best medium for power/sound and being stealth since it appears stock.

I'm almost always against this kind of stuff, but after watching a few channels on YouTube devoted to CA car culture, some car guys out there are really, really pushing it. You got people running straight piped V10/V12s all day and the sounds coming from those cars are just ear splitting. There's a reason mechanics wear ear protection in the pits, and when you have these folks bouncing that kind of noise off of buildings in residential areas the possibility of hearing damage is possible.

I have to imagine they're not going to bother the typical guy who maybe a resonator delete or aftermarket muffler, this law was probably created due to the guys around Beverly Hills etc. constantly destroying everyone's ear drums with their basically wide open exhausts.

As usual, it likely comes down to a handful of people ruining it for everyone. Of course, the government targets everyone and brings it down to the lowest common denominator instead of vigorously going after the big offenders. Nothing new here.

So CHP will target exhaust modification but won’t target speeders at 90mph+, pipe smokers and bottle drinkers that actually kill people. Is there something wrong with this picture?

Thanks! Sorry, missed that. Section I quoted was for "new" vehicles. 95 dBA is amazingly generous (and loud).

27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.

(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor vehicles with a manufacturer’s gross vehicle weight rating of less than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited to, nonoriginal exhaust equipment.

California's new exhaust noise law

http://www.thedrive.com/news/25799/c...ine-you-for-it

I wonder how loud 95 dB compared to the MPPSK exhaust? Or other M exhausts?

edit:
found this thread
https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1461293

I would assume MPPSK exhaust is OK, but I don't like the trend the law is taking

95 dB is very loud. Especially on the newer turbocharged engines, things are pretty quiet unless you're at WOT, and with the power modern sport cars are pushing out, if if you're at WOT you're already above the speed limit or making your traction control system work. Especially in California where traffic never stops, a person at WOT are probably driving wrecklessly or are over the speed limit as a result they're probably as bad as the pipe smokers and bottle drinkers.

One needs to go Laguna Seca, they have decibel restrictions, even then some cars are still very loud. (I'm aware there's the slow down before turn 5 or 6 w/e it is strategy to cheat the system)

Just like how pistol grips on a rifle make people felons so instead let's just make them put a plastic fin around the grip so that they CANT wrap their hand around it. That way the people are safer!!

So they created an exhaust law (or edited one) because performance-like cars were killing people in intersection shows?

It is 2019, aren't we beyond or at least calling out laws and people who go stereotype people into groups?

You have a loud exhaust, people who killed people last week had a loud exhaust. YOUR ONE OF THEM!. $1000 please.
