How did you guys make it look quite easy to do? I couldn't remove anything after trying for 1/2 hour before heading out for dinner. :-(

To be honest I lost patience with it. I tried everything but could not get my hands into the lower part to unclip the bottom ones.

In the end I just pulled with brut force and the cam out. Lost a couple of clips in the process but not really an issue as the Black Grilles are on for good

How about this: (Yeah, I don't think it works, but here it is)

PS: That license plate is so out of place and I didn't want to airbrush it out since almost everyone is required to display them (I should know, I paid over $400 in tickets)
This type of grill (chrome frame with black bars) is from factory on our X5d M-Sport.
To my eyes it looks better with chrome frame on black car.

Tools you will need:
1. Long skinny flat head screw driver
2. Size 30 - Torx Screw Driver
3. You girlfriend's skinny finger (to pop out the bottom 3 clips)

Step 1: Pop the hood

Step 2: Peel off the Rubber Strip to uncover the 5 Torx Screws

Step 3: Unscrew the 5 Torx screws

Step 4: Lift up the 3 white bumper holders and pull the bumper outward about 1 inch

Step 5: Take off the round-rectangular black air intake cover on the left side to access the back of the kidney grilles.

Note: It is MUCH EASIER to start with the left side grille.

Step 6: Use the flat head screw driver to stick out the two clips at the top of the grille, make sure you use one hand to hold the screw driver while the other hand holding the chrome part and trying to pull it outward.

Note: Make use of the rectangular hole at the middle of the two grilles to get access to the 2 inner side clips.

Step 7: Stick the flat head screw driver into the "rectangular" hole to stick out the inner side clip,

Caution: Use another hand to pull out the grille while you doing this step, otherwise the grille might pop back in.

Step 8: Unclip the outer side clip using the screw driver.

Step 9: (HARD) Use you finger to feel the bottom 3 clips and pop them out, use another hand to pull the grill out at the same time.

Step 10: Do the same steps for the other side.
This helped immensely. 20 min start to finish and only one cut fingertip

Anyone have the official BMW instruction for the night vision ones? Just curious if its rocket science. There is a link in the pdf in the second post but I "don't have access" to it apparently.

Also, love the tools recommended in this thread.

I really want to do something like this with mine, but I am not sure that Mineral Silver Lux line is as amenable to this look as other colors and those with M sport aesthetics. With the M sport, there is so much more of the front that is black that it looks good. With mine, it may be the only black section on the whole front of the car....may look wierd

Your absolutely right.. mixing chrome and black is rarely a good combination IMO so not all trims look good with the black kidney grills.

Just switched mine .. 10 Minutes, went for the "take of chrome first" strategy and it worked almost without problems. ... lost one of the chrome ring latches in the process, but will this will not affect a reinstall. Error was mine, I took off the entire chrome ring, not just the upper part ... reading carefully would have helped.

GREAT question. I just received my boxed set of gloss replacement front and side grilles/gills for my X5M, and I am TOTALLY hesitant to just try and pull the grille out like that. On the other hand, I think gaining access under the hood for the F85 may be harder than the F15, but I'm going to try the under the hood method first. Pulling just looks way too risky.

I did some online searches and there's this ridiculous youtube clip of some dudes taking bolt cutters to their stock grilles in order to just cut out the vanes which could make removal easy. Of course, they nuked the original grilles, but I don't think I'd ever be putting the originals back on anyways.

Either way, I ain't yanking those things out that way. Looks like a massive recipe for total disaster...

I might try this method tomorrow since the weather is supposed to warm up by then. It SEEMS simple enough so I will give it a shot.

If the tabs give too much resistance to me while applying reasonable force, then I will have the break out the tools and go for the more conventional approach.

I've got an Alpine white luxury line. Which kidney grills would look best for this combo?

It depends on the theme you going for. If you have a lot of chrome accents then the chrome outer ring and black slats would be good or if you want to do all chrome it might work. If you have gloss black trim aka shadowing trims from Msport then the m performance grills would be the the obvious choice.

Mostly chrome at the moment.

It looks easy enough, but here are the reasons I wouldn't do it:

1. Break a clip or some on the original one.
2. Made the clip holes on the bumper bigger than what it supposed to be.
3. Break the slats and cuts your fingers like a knife.
4. Fell back, landed on the back of your head, and got a concussion at the very least.

Is this process (the list of step by step above) the same for a 50i?

More engine coverings...

Well that was sort of a PITA.

The BIGGEST thing is the side tabs...one those are undone, the bottom and top come out much quicker!

I did mine. Took 30 minutes (or less). No cuts on my hands, no mars nicks or scratches on the paint. The how-to is very good, but might make it seem harder than it is.

ok, it took me 40 min to figure out the mechanics of the clips, and 10 more minutes to finish the process. Though I broke couple of bottom clips on the first grill.

Sorry, shots are taken under different light, so the white balance is off and the car appears to be in different colors. Should be Imperial Blue. Black one looks much better in reality, I may retake some pics.
