Scanner Recommendations

I want to buy an OBDII scanner and reset tool...

Anyone have recommendations on the best, complete one for the money?

Thank you.

Your going to want bmw specific tools. I have ista p, bm3, and bimmer bimmerlink. Generic scanners wont read most modules and will not clear codes

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for.

So, I presume you mean these?

Bimmerlink:

BM3??

Unless I'm missing something...I'm not planning on tuning the X5M at this time, so I presume the BM3 isn't applicable to my needs...?

Thank you for the help.

Guys, what’s the 2022 recommendation? Foxwell 530 w BMW adapters/software? I will use it for a 2007 e92 and f15 x5 2015. Appreciate input. I got all my coding done so don’t need to control/code modules.

Just my 2 cents, but my indy guy used Carista and it seems to capture the codes pretty well .

I would say go Wifi dongle (modBMW/MHD black, these are full rate wifi and will so work with the E) and get Bimmerlink and/or ISTA.

You can use you laptop for ISTA with the Wifi dongle, don't need a enet. If you plan on coding then yes, you will need the enet cable.

I do have the 530 and think its the biggest waist of money.
1. It is stupid slow and the interface is clunky.
2. If you are going to read out live values, you can get the same with BMLink or free app like Torque or ISTA.
3. If you are doing any actual diagnostics/troubleshooting, you are going to be using ista. (plus ista manuals/instructions)
4. Pay per vehicle vendor.
5. Cable.

*edit* and it looks like the wifi dongle is supported by the Carista app mentioned above

I use only two pieces of hardware, a ENET cable and an OBDLink MX+.

The ENET cable gets used for Esys and ISTA on my laptop, the OBDLink dongle gets used for BimmerCode, BimmerLink, and OBD Fusion on my phone.

Whether that works for the E cars, I have no idea, the F85 is my first foray into BMW.

Ok, thanks guys. I a dedicated old school precision Dell laptop and 2 generations of BMW cables including Enet cable (latest) and sounds like I will just go and download/buy sone software then for better results. This is what I do for my Audi too w vagcom so ready to dive in. Thanks for quick response, any particular place you recommend to purchase. I know rosstech was big for the Audi diagnostics.

Cheers,

Forgot to mention, don't waist your time with a Bluetooth adapters, ie MX+ (Yes i have one as well). Bluetooth adapters are not supported by all apps (MHD/BM3) as all of these need a wifi/enet+usbC adapter dongle.

Most of the android apps work perfectly fine via the Wifi, so the Bluetooth adapters are a kinda slower more redundant thing.

Are you looking to reset service interval for brake fluid? Don’t need a tool for that - https://youtu.be/zVvvcqKNdm4

Thanks again, it worked perfectly. No more light...but I will have the brake system flushed at our next engine oil change interval.

Hi Everyone!
I have some BMW and want to find a scanner tool to activate some functions, like mirror folding when close the car and other optionals.
Which one do you recommend?

Thanks!

After using paid version (yearly subsription) of Carly for about 3 years for errors and codings I changed to paid BimmerCode + BimmerLink few months ago.

Carly shows more errors in the main screen health check, however after using the BimmerLink I realized Carly was mixing other types of messages together in one view. So I suppose better are those two BMW specific apps, also they are paid just once.

And I use BimmerCode + BimmerLink with the Vgate Icar wifi adaptor, I couldn't manage Enet cable + RJ45 to USB-C glan (which should be the fastest connection) to get working with my phone.

I disabled start-stop, ASD, hazard lights blinking after hard braking (which I do quite frequently and don't want to confuse others around / oposite direction, however I left the EURO settings for braking force display = blinking brake lights), all the nonsense disclaimers. I enabled front and rear cameras view at any speed, but I couldn't simply enable top view beyond the max predefined speed / distance threshold.

I´m actually have Carly, but doesn´t have all the custom settings for my BMW´s.
Will try with bimmerlink + Bimmercode.
