(100%) FTM to TPMS (DIY)

I have recently retrofitted TPMS sensors to my F85. After 2014, BMW did something good and merged the RDC module with DSC. No more additional module for the TPMS. It is working with DSC and Remote Controller module to read the data from sensors.

So it makes this retrofit super easy. I was going to get OEM sensors but then i found out a great deal. They look OEM but China Knock Offs.

The great part of this product is total costed me $40 and another great thing is they need no activation

None of the well known tire stores want to install since they look OEM so your tire guy down the street will swap for you.

Main reason i did this retrofit is the rubber stem valves keep failing one another. I believe the vehicle driven in snow so the salt also on the road caused them to crack. It was only 25k miles when i got it. So having TPMS on the wheel is must.

After the sensors installed i did codings. And reset the TPMS on idrive. Now i have full working system less than $150.

Coding for the F85/86 :

ADD 2VB to VO. You can either code BDC_BODY2,DSC, NBT2, KOMBI

or just code this parameters :

BDC_BODY2

RC_RDC_ENABLE = aktiv

HU_NBT2

RDC = aktiv
RDC_DRUCK_TEMP = aktiv
RDC_FORTSCHRITTSANZEIGE = aktiv
REIFENUEBERWACHUNG_RDC_RPA = rdc
RPA = nicht_aktiv
ERFS = erfs

DSC2

ReifenPannenerkennung = aktiv_RDCi

DKOMBI2

DSC_MIT_RPA = ohne_RPA
ST_TYR_RDC_ALIVE = Dont change (nicht_aktiv)
ST_TYR_RDC_TIMEOUT = Dont change (nitch_aktiv)

Pretty much it. You now go to iDrive, Reset the TPMS. Then start driving. First reset took about 15 minutes of driving and didnt show any data on the screen. Then i reset again. Took about 5 minutes and showed all the data.

I wonder if the OP’s f85 is a Canadian import. My 2015 f06 is a Canadian import and it has the FTM/RPA setup…but I have no desire to increase maintenance costs by adding TPM sensors.

Don’t get me wrong…my 2013 f06 had TMPS & 2014 f15 has TPMS and it’s nice to see the PSI & temp with a simple push of a button…but I also keep a tire gauge in all my vehicles…and the FTM/RPA system still alerts if a tire gets low. So not having to worry about the TPM sensors eventually dying and needing replacement and the added expense for each wheel is a welcome relief to not have to worry about. For me…I guess it equals out in the wash.

SaNGRia…if you pop back into this thread…let us know if your VIN sticker on the driver‘s door jamb has a MAPLE LEAF on the upper right corner which would mean it is a Canadian import (see my f06’s VIN as an example below):

I thought It is already mentioned on my post that i have done this due to being Canadian, but always nice to share the LEAF :

YEP! Thanks for the clarification. The 2VB (TPMS) is optional in Canada...whereas it is required in the USA.

So I didn’t do my homework properly for this adventure…
I got sensors installed in my Canadian spec F15 and planned to code this change from FTM to TPMS using BimmerCode, but it turns out that bimmercode is lacking the necessary options, even in expert mode.

I need to switch to TPMS because I will be importing my car to the US when we move this summer.

What is my best solution here? Bear in mind my laptop is a Mac with no Ethernet port… just USB-C.

Where does it say you HAVE to convert to the RDC/TPM system if you import to the US?

I ask because I have a Canadian import (my 2015 f06 650ix GC) and it still has the FTM system and apparently passed the inspection (I wasn’t the one that imported the car). BTW, I just had news tires installed this past week and appreciate the savings from not having to purchase four wheel TPM sensors. Simply reset the system like my old e53 X5 which also had the indirect RPA/FTM system which measures wheel circumference to determine loss of tire pressure. As long as the vehicle in the display shows 4 green tires…you’re good to go.

You're probably right, and indirect TPMS might be acceptable. I know it was up to about 2018 for sure, but I've read anecdotes in FB immigration groups of people being denied after that. Either way, I had a spare set of sensors anyway so figured I'd get them mounted in my X5. Now I just need to activate the system somehow!

(Although you're right, even if I can't activate, the computer showing 4 green tires and the wheels having visible sensors in them, should do the trick either way!)

Folks have done the conversion on F15 2014. No RDC controller and wiring needed on 2014/2015 F15. I just got the sensors, and they look OEM.

Hi guys, seeing this thread encouraged me and bought the OEM sensors to retrofit my X5 2014. We followed the steps in the thread and they coded my car as it says in the instructions and now I have 2 error codes that we don't know how to solve and no operation on TPMS

Enjoy!
got mine working per above VO coding the the CADF mods). So, I now have 2VB but only see tire pressure not temps. I checked the RDC_DRUCK_TEMP is active. so now wondering if there are different type of sensor some that send temp and some that don't? Also anyone know if it's possible to display the pressures in the center console so you don't have to go under vehicle info status in i-drive?

ideas?
