2014 X5d - Active Tank

My CEL went on recently. BMW dealer stated that my Active Tank needs to be replaced. My indy mechanic confirmed this diagnosis and further noted that the "level sensor" is creating the CEL. I have 75,000 miles on the odometer.

I am aware of the Extended Warranty being offered on the Active Tank for model years 2009 - 2013. I pushed the dealer as well as BMW Corporate to cover my 2014 with no success. Dealer wants $2,200 for the repair.

Has anyone had the Active Tank problem on 2014+ (f15)?

I am aware of Bosch part that replaces the sensors without replacing the entire tank but it is only available on 2013 and years prior. Anyone aware of a fix for 2014+?

Advice on best place (cheapest) to source the tank? Indy mechanic is willing to install if I buy the tank from another source.

Coming from 2012 VW Touareg TDI. 175,000 trouble free miles. Miss it terribly. haha

Forum help would be greatly appreciated.

Unlike the E70 35d the F15 35d active tank is not very serviceable, the only thing you can replace is the SCR Delivery unit which unfortunately does not house the level sensor. The Flange Module which per BMW states "Not replaceable/serviceable" is where the level sensor resides, which means you'll have to replace the tank.

Tanks are not cheap, $900-$1,000 you don't want to risk using USED tanks.

Try filling it up to the max.

I wonder if the resistor fix is applicable to f15.

Tried filling to the max twice. Did not work. CEL still on. Thanks for the suggestion nonetheless.

Does the type of DEF put in the tank effect the sensor in the active tank...just curious?

My research says that all DEF is the same. Having said that, I use VW DEF because it is reasonably priced ($12 for 2 gallon jug). Additionally, I believe Bosch was making the tank parts for both companies (BMW and VW). Hence another checkbox for me to confirm VW DEF is fine in BMW .... right or not.

At this point I am going to follow Mr. 47's advice and purchase a new tank and move on. Keep my receipts in a safe place for when BMW extends tank warranty for the F15. 🙂

Thanks to the group for sharing their thoughts. Much appreciated.

I have an X3d and had the check engine light SCR active tank erratic/intermittent P203E. I followed someone instructions and drain active tank and put in distilled water and left overnight. Filled with BlueDEF ultimate and filled active tank. Still the error persisted. After one week I decided to clear the Check Engine Light. So far the light has not come back on. It may be that it just took a couple of weeks with a full active tank to finish the decrystallization. I had this error when I bot the car a year ago and had it check at a dealer two weeks ago and it was diagnosed needed new SCR active tank $2100. I am thrilled since I want to trade in for an X5.

The Blue DEF ultimate was $5 more but I thought it was worth a try. This has chemicals added to help decrystalize.
