Sounds good! Anyone listening to these needs to really listen with some good headphones on. That's the best way to capture the tone/note/volume, etc. Yours sounds lower and more purry than my Borla mufflers. I think the Borlas are a little more whappy and a tad higher note. But of course you have no drone so that's big plus.

Nice descriptive words.

I wish I had a good camera with a appropriate mic to capture the real sound much better but this is close enough.

I believe if you had the ultraquiet resonators from Vibrant instead of the borlas, you'd solve the drone issue 90%. But it's additional cost. I was thinking that they could replace the front OEM resonators.

I actually wouldn't want it any quieter than my current setup so IF I get bored and decide to mess with it again, I'd probably just do the same as your setup.

Hi lads, first post.

Have read all the posts. Summary:

X-pipe with muffler delete is the popular option. Some have found a slight drone in comfort, and some have found the sound too radical opting for some small mufflers each side.

I’m curious if a solutions such as this fellow provides a rounded balance on a ricer budget...

A muffler semi bypass....

I am not sure if this solution is audible in the cabin.

I can confirm that I’ve gone the route of the bypass. The improvement to sound is notable. Outside the engine sounds like a sporty v8. Inside the cabin with sunroof up and windows closed the car is still very much luxurious with a subdued sound of sport and a nice overdrive note on changes. Open up windows or roof and the sound comes in nicely. No tune, and no drone.

A highly economical job that provides a step up without going radical, and something perhaps to try if wanting to dip the toes. Can always take it further if not sufficient to personal taste.

Hey guys - looking to do this in the DFW area but getting RIDICULOUS quotes compared to the guys on the thread (~$1,000 - $1,200). Has anyone done this or knows of someone reputable in the DFW area?

A few other observations I want to make sure I got right:

- X-pipe needs to be 2.5 or 2.75" and avoid magnaflow.

- Quad tips need to be no longer than 10" in total, 2.5 ID / 3.5 OD (4.0 if less than 4mm of separation between each tip)

Wanting to pull the trigger this weekend so any help is much appreciated! Thanks to all the pioneers of this mod!

Look in the e90 forums locally for a muffler shop. That's how I found mine in Houston.

Try to find a Meineke closeby. Some of them have good installers. Do not go to a "tuning shop" for exhaust install as they will try to charge you big bucks for an easy welding job.

Found a highly recommended muffler shop down the highway from me (Pronto Muffler off of central expressway for those in the DFW area).

Videos and pics to come!

My local shop says it will be tough to weld in the x-pipe without dropping the system out of the car. No room to get around it with the welder. They quoted me ~300-350 just to cut the muffler out and weld in the straight pipes. Additional for the x-pipe depending on how difficult it proves to be. Anybody else hear this from an exhaust shop?
Thinking I should shop around.

Nonsense. The x-pipe is in a very easy to reach location. Takes literally 2 minutes to cut the OEM pipes and max. 5 mins to weld an X-pipe into place. I would not do business with that shop. A trained monkey could install the X-pipe in under 20 mins w/o dropping the system.

I contemplated going that route but decided against it because I love the sound of the muffler delete and don't really find the need to quiet it down.

I was going to install an electronic By-pass then pipe back to the exhaust tips to bypass the muffler. So in both sceneries, the exhaust exists from the same tailpipes. (Didn't go this route due to the failure rate of the By-passes)

There’s NO WAY they can’t do the x pipe without lowering the system. I sat out and watched the install and it was easy. Took 1.5 hours.

Sound is a lot quieter than I expected, not to say it is “quiet”. WOT is pretty raspy and loud but under normal driving conditions it gives it a nice growl.

I have noticed a bit of a lag in lower RPMs but I assume that’ll correct as the computer gets use to it.

Hate the tips the shop used so I’ll need to find a good set and have them reinstalled. Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

Edit: cost: $150 for the x pipe, $190 for the tips (hate them), $ 160 for labor. Unfortunately they dinged my left exhaust outlet a bit but it’s hardly noticeable.

Post this question in the regional forums for the E90s. They usually have some good suggestions to exhaust shops.

That's how I found my shop in Houston

Where do you find staggered dual 4" tips with 2.5" inlet less then 10" long? Everything staggered is 11.5" or so in length.

So I found another shop in my area that says he'll do it for $280. Set it up for next Friday (still waiting for the tips to come in). I can't wait!
