Testing the beast, stage 1: IND X5M F85 S63Tu dyno at AMS Performance.

DYNO VIDEO

BMW’s turbo engines have radically changed the M ownership experience. While many lament the loss of BMW’s normally aspirated powerplants for their ability to give every owner a race car like experience on the street or on the track, few can deny the ability of the new turbo powerplants to ignite an internal horsepower war within BMW M’s very own walls. With each turbo car released by the M division, the bar is raised progressively higher. Compounded with consistent under-rating of M’s turbo cars, the turbo era does have some welcome perks.

All of us at IND were therefore thrilled to dyno test our new X5M, and brought it to our friends at AMS Performance at our first opportunity. AMS Performance very kindly opened their busy tuning schedule to accommodate our X5M on their DynoJet dynamometer, and the results were at once pleasing, surprising, and yet all too familiar for fans of BMW M turbo engines.

Our X5M roared to an astounding 535 SAE corrected all wheel horsepower, without breaking a sweat, in completely factory form. We are of course thrilled at the real world power output of the car! The powerband is incredibly linear (something which all X5M owners can attest to), and the car so clearly has ample power on tap.

We are excited to have taken this first step with our X5M, and are thrilled to move forward with the project. Stay tuned for more updates!

Wow. Awesome numbers that V8 is nuts. So crank is way into the 600's for hp and tq.

Can't wait to see this motor in the next gen M5.

So I understand the engine in the x5m is an improved version of what we have in our m5/m6's? What's the main difference, anyone know?

Looks like those dyno numbers are much better than the stock m5/m6's?

Those are great numbers from the dyno. Especially for AWD. Now if ///M could have shaved more than 150lbs than they did...

Indeed it is the same engine but further improved by ///M. Making a little more horsepower and a lot more torque.

I will be highly disappointed if BMW ///M's long term strategy for ///M engines is to continue to use the same exact power plants but increasing power and torque by increasing boost. If the ///M Division decides to use the same Twin Turbo V8 setup or any kind of 6 cylinder engine in the next M5, I won't be buying it. Doesn't BMW sell enough 3 Series so that ///M Division can develop an all new 3.0L Twin Turbo V10 for the next generation of M5's and M6's??! Lol! But based on the fact that the 1st generation X5M used the S63 engine and now the next generation X5M uses an improved S63tu, I am afraid for the future bespokeness of M5's and M6's. At least they'll have OLED Tail Lights though. Lol!

So much power.

I have been noticing lately that BMW does not really tell the real HP on their ///M cars... Definitely a good thing for us. We get more than we expect!

I doubt they increase the power solely in terms of increasing boost. Guaranteed they also change their valve timing as well as potentially different cams altogether.

Traded down low tq for less top end power . Not better just different . For a rwd sports car I'd much rather have the M5/6 power curve with the stronger top end . For an AWD 5000 pound SUV this should be nice though . Its boost map and valvetronic differences not much else .

Wasn't their an article/post around the F10 M5 release about bespoke M engines being pretty much done? I don't think anyone is doing this anymore. Audi Quattro used engines that were derived from Lambourghini. Mercedes AMG is basically using one engine and tweaking it across the range. Don't see how/why BMW, being the smallest of the three, would have the resources to make bespoke engines.

What did the previous gen X5m put down on the same dyno?

Did you guys put it on the corner scales?

Do you have any instrumented real world acceleration data?... Trap speed in particular would be nice.
