X5 Windshield replacement
Hi all,
Just had my front windshield replaced on my 2014 X5 m-sport. The vehicle is fully loaded including HUD... the cost to do this from the BMW dealership was $1984.36 USD total. My insurance company, State Farm, only paid out $1000 as they found a "more competitive" quote with 3rd party glass. Cost breakdown from BMW dealership as follows: Windshield Adhesive $59 Window-Glass Adhesive $34.62 Windshield Green $1008.64 Cover. Windshield $25.33 Rubber Buffer $20.93 Sensor Rain/Light/S $278.99 Total parts: $1427.51 Total labor: $250.00 Total: $1784.36 Dealer turnaround time was within 24 hours. Adding this as a data point to people who are considering factory BMW glass vs OEM alternatives. The dealer did tell me to stay far away from safe lite for fear of cocking it up. Prices are all USD. Hope this helps! |

Thats crazy that the ins wouldn't pay. Do you have an agent or direct? I'd raise holy hell. I've always called my local glass company and requested OEM. Never once had an issue. Been with Encompass for years.

I have Liberty Mutual with a standard zero deductible glass policy. Windshield got cracked on a roadtrip. OEM glass was covered fully, including the camera calibration at the dealership for "loaded" cars. Considering State Farm is typically a premium provider, I would push back...that is BS.

i got a rather large chip on my windshield.
i got quoted $1600 to replace glass with heads up display. i also have state farm, but i hesitate to make a claim. i found out that if i turn in the lease with a broken windshield, i'd get charged $600, or they may only charge me i think they said $25 or $50 if they consider it just a chip. |

my insurance company (USAA) will fund replacement anywhere that is authorized...which included BMW dealerships.
However, I asked the BMW service guys who they send the cars to for glass replacement and they told me the local shop. The local shop confirmed this....and further said they order the OEM glass from BMW. The kicker is if you go directly to this local shop, you get the same work, with the same glass, by the same non BMW techs, and pay half the price. Go through the dealer, and you pay twice as much for the same product and work |

My complaint is with my local dealer who delayed the job by one day due to needing to order sensors then a few more days due to needing adhesive. I made the appointment at least 2 weeks in advance and this delay is inconvenient having just returned from Rome and soon headed to Palestine.

Had one replaced about a month ago. Was told only Oem glass existed. Is 3rd party glass now available (not that I would want it)? Might be worth some investigation for the OP's pocketbook's sake. Ours has HUD, DA+, ACC, etc.

I saw that the windshield is so easy to broken, what's the main cause?

We had State Farm for about ten years and they were awesome... Until we had to make a claim. Ten years without a single claim and then the work truck in front of us dropped a 13 foot extension ladder in the middle of I95. Luckily the damage was just rims and tires but State Farm totally screwed us over. I switched a month later to USAA and haven't looked back. So not surprising they are nickel and dime-ing you trying to save a few dollars. F those guys.

For chips and small cracks, you can have them filled for a fraction of the cost and forget all the drama..

Yes, BMW has to recalibrate the camera behind your rearview mirror (if applicable). Called Liberty Mutual, and they said OEM glass only while also letting me select my shop. I went through a highly regarded glass and body place, but their techs did work at the BMW dealership so that the calibration could be done. BMW gave me a loaner too... nice gesture and willingness to be collaborative. Completely seamless and drama free process for me.

I asked whether a trip to the dealer would be needed and they said no....of course I have not had mine replaced, so I can't say whether they could do whatever adjustments are needed.

considering the poor quality of the factory glass i can't imagine the aftermarket alternative being any worse but i too would push for the OEM glass installed and i would lean on the insurance company to install exactly what was on the vehicle especially considering the age of the vehicle.

State Farm took three bids, one from the BMW dealer, then sent me a check for $1.7K. Today my SA said that State Farm probably confused the windshield for my 2008 X5 with the one for the 2015 X5. I mentioned this thread and the prices noted here and the SA countered with a printed worksheet on a windshield replaced on a F15 and the price was north of $2.5K. This may not play out well for me but as the windshield has been replaced the options seemed starkly limited at this point.

Lynx insists they got the right X5 but my SA says no and would not change the price. So now I have to go to my SF agent - with all final bills in hand (tint will be done this afternoon) - and ask them to listen to video tapes of my SA telling Lynx about his estimate. If the audio tape of the SA on the phone confirm SF's position then I have to go to the service manager which will blacklist me with all the SAs. The next nearest BMW deal is Tulsa which is 2 hours one way and may be in the same family.

Safelite did a great job on replacing my glass with OEM glass.
BMW quoted me $1200, Safelite came to my office and did it for <$800. I believe Safelites glass for HUD is like $1200 installed. |

BTW, don't go to safelite glass or some third party glass replace service, trust me you don't want them touch your car |
