Is this thing always supposed to be here?

Brought my car into a performance shop to get some work done. I looked under the sideskirt and noticed this.

Has this thing always been here? I'm guessing they're aids for lifting the car, but are they removable? They're not bothering me, I just never noticed them before.

All BMWs have these jack points.

Don't worry, my dealer apparently didn't know what they were either. Hopefully your dealer will have better luck using them when you have the car serviced.

That's actually terrifying.

If you plan on using these jack points there are some vendors offering a tool to use with your floor jack. They insert into the mounts and provides secure lifting and reduces possible body damage.

Old trick is to place a hockey puck on the jack mount. I've done that on every BMW I've owned over the past 15yrs. Inexpensive, does the trick and never had a problem. You'd be surprised to learn that many shops do the same. Just don't place the jack directly under the jack pad or else you'll hear it crack as it's being raised.

I have a few of these

Very happy with them. They hang in there which is nice if you're doing multiple lifts or.. hypothetically.. drive off with them still in.. and they don't fall out

Interesting. Thanks for the info. Jacking up the car was always one of the most anxiety inducing parts of working on my previous cars.
