Auto H (Auto Hold) question

Hi!

A friend of mine just got a new X6, and since I am on F15 #2 and X5 #7, she thought I would know this...and I don't :-O

When using Auto H in say stop & go traffic, when the Auto H is holding your position, but you are of course not putting your foot on the brake (since you are using Auto H , are the brake lights on to let drivers behind us know, that we are stopped?

Thank you!

Yes, the brake lights are illuminated when stopped using the Auto Hold.

I got the same question when getting my first F15 almost three years ago. But, it's easy to figure this out by seeing the reflection from the car in the back. This city has traffic jam everywhere.

I don't use this feature often. It makes me lazy and less focus sometimes, and it prevents me from moving the car by just releasing the brake.

Auto-Hold will spoil you for sure, and it will get you into trouble when you are used to having it and find yourself at a traffic signal in a car without it!

I went to Q7 and it doesn't have Auto Hold in the United States. Go figure.

The F15 has this?! I assume this is the feature where you bring the car to a stop it holds it there till you apply the Gas correct?

Yes, F15/16 have this feature. It's located behind the shifter towards the console.

No, the brake lights are NOT on if you are using auto-hold. I wondered about this from the start on my '15 X5. It's easy enough to check, just check your rear view mirror while you in a drive through. You'll see the reflection of the brake lights on the car behind. Come to a stop using the brakes, brakes lights are on. Pull up on the auto-hold, release your foot of the brake and the brake lights go out. That is how it has worked on mine from the beginning. If anyone was paying attention, then it would just look like you were driving a manual transmission.
Maybe they behave differently in different markets due to technical rules and regulations in different countries regarding how brake lights work. In any case, it's an easy enough thing to find out. At night, just look in you mirror at anything that is close enough to be lit by your brake lights.

That's strange, my 2015 F16 and 2016 F15 both do, both US spec.

So future muscle memory is enough of an excuse not to use a great feature?

Yeah, I would have guessed different markets would explain it, but if they're US spec then I dunno. I checked again last night just to make sure I wasn't losing my mind, and confirmed, as I said, my brake lights go off when I release the pedal, even when using the auto-hold.

I thought this should be pretty easy and straight forwarding thing. However, it's not, and it starts to confuse people, like me.

Turn-on Auto H - no brake light.
Turn on Auto H and Auto H is in use - brake light ON.

In my case, my MY15 X5 35i (US) and MY18 X5 40e (US) are all acting the same. When the car is in D or R, the Auto H (in use) will behave the same as when I step on the brake; the brake light the left/right as well as the 3rd brake light are all ON.

In theory, I also believe the light should stay ON when Auto H is in use, otherwise, there is no way for the drivers/cars behind us to be notified of our status. We may be hit from the behind, we may cause more accidents, and we will show BMW how good American lawyers can be.

I just tried Auto H when I pulled in the garage about 30 mins ago. I came to a stop, engine running, car in D and foot on the brake pedal. I engaged Auto H and took my foot off the brake pedal....brake lights still on

It works on my F 15!

Ehh. I don't think it's that big of a deal. It's actually the same as having a manual transmission. If I'm driving a manual, when I come to a stop light, and once I come to a complete stop, I take my foot off the brake (as long it's level and doesn't start rolling). I think that's pretty normal. Same with my DCT in my M3. Once I come to a complete stop, I usually take my foot off the brake.

I don't use auto hold much (makes me a little nervous) but here is an interesting youtube on how it works. I did not know you can drive around with it on. When I tried it, I turned it on after I came to a light or while in traffic.

Of course you can drive around with it on, that is how it was designed (and my dealer told me to use it, but I never do). You turn it on and then let it do it's thing when you stop. I just feel most comfortable with my foot on the brake when I am stopped.

I use it all the time - except when I come to parallel park at the end of the journey, as it tends to stop me when I'm trying to move extra slowly.

I just started using this in traffic and at red lights and it's great. My wife's Lexus has the feature but it's only good for 3-5 seconds before it let's loose. Much better on the X5.
