Has anyone bought this Apple CarPlay box?

Seems promising for those of us with the older iDrive that doesn't have CarPlay.

Seems a good solution for non CarPlay iDrive. most frequently used Apps should be "Google maps" if I have this box.

It's either this kind of box or adapting an Apple TV power source and use AirPlay.
I would go for the 2nd option.

That’s really interesting. I’m not sure it’s worth twice the price though. I have no interest in watching TV or movies in the car.

My option would be Apple TV not because of that, but because it will for sure be updated over the years, ensuring full compatibility with future iOS versions.

Apple Carplay would be a lot more useful with a touchscreen which essentially became your iPhone. Interacting with the phone via iDrive would idrive me nuts.

On a serious note, my comment truly reflects how i feel about it. I have it in my car, i forced myself to use it for a few days to see maybe it might grow... Nope. Its interface when used with knob very cumbersome, ones used with the touch screen not comfortable, ( i hate stains on the screen). Apple maps are not on the level with competitors ( to say the least)...

Just got my brand new X5 last month and I specd carplay...biggest waste of money.

I prefer the regular iDrive bluetooth integration by far and have carplay turned off

if you have rear entertainment, just get the apple tv, hdmi to rca converter box, usb car charger with 2 usb ports, 1 hdmi cable, 1 rca cable and you are good

apple tv to converter via hdmi
converter to car via rca
both apple tv and converter power by usb car charger

use ur phone as wireless hot spot

tuck everything in passenger seat back pocket

You were using CarPlay for Siri? I really just want CarPlay to use Waze on the big screen...

iOS 12 will allow you to use Carplay for Waze and Google Maps.

I've been talking to the company and was sent the following instructional video in case anyone is wondering (not an X5 but you should get the idea):

I have yet to part with my $439, but may do so soon. Here is the purchase link they sent me after verifying my VIN and seeing a pic of my screen: http://www.unichip-tec.com/h-pd-16.html#_pp=118_689
