In today's video, we'll show you a super quick and easy way to turn off Auto Stop Start... which is, in my opinion, the most annoying feature of ALL modern day cars...

What feature in your car drives you nuts?

Why would someone code this out when all you have to do is keep the button pushed in? Do people just do this for fun or there a real benefit? I've had my car for almost 5 years and have never used it. Just curious really...

I don't understand what you mean by "keep the button pushed in", but can't you just accept that some people find this an annoying, distracting, and therefore potentially hazardous feature. Anything that makes driving a more relaxed experience is a safety benefit. It's easy to make a dismissive response about switching it off every time you start the car, but why should that be the only sensible approach?

My 2015 F32 retains the last setting of Auto s/s as new from the factory - no coding needed

I set it to OFF, car starts up every time with it OFF, no need to push anything...

If BMW had released all these cars with that feature enabled as standard there would be almost zero interest in coding it. My car (2014) came with ASS defaulted ON, and there are two separate coding options - default OFF, and memory - I chose the former, since I never want to use ASS.

I was referring to the button right above the on/off ignition. If you keep in pressed down then the car will never start with the engine on/off feature while you're stopped. I have a 2015 428i and it came with the car I'm sure older cars may not have the feature so that's why they code it out.....makes sense.

My 2015 automatically leaves the ASS in whichever mode it was in when the car was last driven.

This seems to be a deliberate change from 2014 to 2015, at least in some cars. I saw a 2015 US user manual that specifically describes the memory feature as standard; this is not in my 2014 UK manual.

I coded mine to remember its last state, mine is a 2015 and always used to default to on

Hi, I have two separate problems with my 2013 F30 320d MSport Auto and 2012 F25 X3 20d MSport Auto. With my 320, when I stop at traffic lights the auto-stop start engages, then when I lift my foot off the brake to move forward the engine starts (as normal) but there is massive thud as the gear is engaged and the car jolts forward.

With my X3, when I stop at traffic lights the auto stop start engages (as normal), but I have an intermittent problem that whilst stationary the auto stop-start starts the engine but moved the gear from Drive to Park. I use B4BMW in Glasgow (5* BMW specialist) and they have found out that other X3's have this problem and BMW's response is to replace the transmission, or live with the fault and turn off the auto stop-start each time.

For both of these issues, I'd be interested in changing the coding to remember the Last User Mode or to have the ASS (unfortunate acronym) / MSA switched to off by default.

Can anyone help me with codes or what to do next?

Try these, in E-Sys or probably available in BimmerCode Expert Mode:

All in FEM_BODY / 3023

Auto-Start-Stop is OFF when the engine is started
TCM_MSA_DEFAULT_OFF nicht_aktiv => aktiv

Auto-Start-Stop setting is remembered across engine starts
TCM_MSA_MEMORY nicht_aktiv => aktiv
I believe this is set to aktiv in more recent cars than mine

Auto Stop/Start not enabled automatically in ECO Mode
TCM_MSA_ECO_MODE aktiv => nicht_aktiv
This one may not be available, depending on your I-Step
It only appeared for me when the car was recoded
