N57 35d (and others) Diesel HPFP Recall

It looks like BMW will be voluntarily recalling several diesel vehicles to replace the HPFP:
https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?nhtsaId=21V586

NHTSA Recall ID Number : 21V586
Manufacturer : BMW of North America, LLC
Subject : High-Pressure Fuel Pump May Fail
Make Model Model Years
BMW 328D 2014-2018
BMW 535D 2014-2016
BMW 740LD 2015
BMW X3 2015-2017
BMW X5 2014-2018

Dealers were notified on July 29th, and letters will be going out to Owners in September.

Does anyone have details on the improved Bosch part? Is it still a CP4?

I just got this notification in email from NHTSA. Will keep an eye on the mail for recall letter from BMW. I assume parts are going to be hard to come by given the scope of vehicles affected by this.

On another note, would be nice if they would add MY 2014 X5's to the injector warranty extension so I could get reimbursed for our 2 failed injectors.

Just brought my 2015 x5 35d in to the dealership for a particulate sensor replacement. Long story short.. all emissions parts under warranty 10 year 120,000 miles. Including injectors and high pressure fuel pump. I asked about the recall on fuel pump rep explained no recall as of now.

Ironically - that sounds exactly like what happened to my x5d recently. It would just stall, idrive message, and done. I'd have to restart it. Scary actually.

So EGR issues and now this. I'll be calling my SA.

Dealer said not my VIN - I don't believe them though and will stay on it.

Garage List
I see that my 2018 X5d with May of 2018 build date might be on the list. I just bought it and don't even have plates on it yet!!! I'm guessing I need to look for notice in the mailbox. At least they are doing something about it. My 4.4i V8 X5 had the same valve seal issue all the V8's have and they won't acknowledge it. Once it starts smoking, its $5-$7k to fix it.....

Recall info

https://www.nhtsa.com/recall

BMW probably hasn't released the cars that need to be recalled. It probably will happen next month.

Sounds like they are only changing out the hpfp for cars that had it once replaced. Cars that have not had it replaced I guess are considered good?

My second pump was put in at 43k and I just cracked 100k… will be interesting to see if I need to go in or not…

Did they update the design? Will the replacement have a warranty too?

That sounds backwards. You would think anything that has not had the pump replaced would be included in the recall, and anything that has had it replaced would be fine.

Anyone know any more about this recall? Taking my car to the dealer for an overpriced oil change/brake flush and thorough final inspection before the extended warranty expires, and wondering whether this recall is something I should mention at this time, or just wait for a notice…

Doesn't hurt to ask your local service advisor. If they don't seem to come up with something just wait till it comes in the mail. Or call bmw North America

Same here - I did 2 injectors and need to do 4 more now. Cleaned them to buy some time but my window is closing fast.

2014 and 2015 X5d should be added to the extended warranty. Ours is a '15 I mis-typed when I said 2014. Either way, all of the N57 equipped chassis should be covered since all are experiencing failures ~60-80k miles.

I hope so as mine is N57, but so far, it isn't looking like it will be covered. That said, I have reached out to BMW directly so we'll see what they say. There are definitely issues with their HPFS in the US models. My newest code is on injector 3, so I'm dropping some additive in with the hopes that it goes away like the code for #1 did after the last additive was deployed.

File with NHTSA on the injectors. I contacted BMWNA as well but got the standard "not covered for your VIN" response. Which is fine. I was expecting that, but wanted to add the contact incident for reference.

Be careful with additives. I've read (only read, so take with a grain of salt) that BMW sends a fuel sample out to test for water and/or additives in the event of a repair they might be on the hook for. I don't know if they deny claims based on findings, but like insurance companies, I don't want to give them any excuse to weasel out of paying.

The N57 is explicitly covered by this recall, as summarized in the NHTSA recall above. Recall notices are scheduled to be mailed in 3 days on 9/20/21.

My model year 2014 (production date 05/2014) does not show the recall when I put in my VIN. But in description of the recall it shows that it should be included.

I got my recall letter in the mail. Interestingly it says repair -unavailable at this time on the form. So I guess the new pump version is not out?
