Front License Plate

Just took delivery of our 2022 BMW iX eDrive 50.

The front license plate holder is no bueno. It looks like it has double-sided tape on in, does not screw in.

What's the recommended solution for a front license plate for those of us who live in states that require this?

I have a US Mill Works one that goes into the tow hook for my 911 that is too short to use with the iX, so I am inquiring there.

Any other ideas or options...?

Can you please update if you hear back from US Mill Works? I use their toll tag bracket currently too and am hoping they'll make one for the iX.

You might have missed this:

And it's probably tape because anything you do to compromise the integrity of the "grille" is likely to damage the radar. Is there some indication that the license plate holder won't stay on?

Doesn't the dealer install it in States where it's required?

I would cut off their fingers if they even attempted such a thing! lol

My state requires the plate, and haven't run one in 15+ years without an issue

Used to be common for dealers to install a front plate bracket (unless you told them no), but much less now I suspect (probably because of outraged clients). But specifically for the iX, as in the above forum link, it appears that to install one the dealer needs written confirmation:

Obtain written confirmation from the vehicle owner that the state in which the I20 will be registered requires a front license plate.

Indicating to me at least it might not be easily reversible.

Illinois requires it and I must say it looks ok. Not sure I’ll trust it when I put a Lisence plate mounted toll transponder on it.

I’ve used the 3M auto body double sided tape for the front plate before. Never had a problem. That stuff is pretty strong.

I used it with the E60 and F10 stock front frames. Those had less contact with the adhesive 3M auto body tape than the frame that comes with the iX.

I am looking to get one like this. Have you noticed any change in range since installing this?

How does this get fixed to the side of the grill? Is there a specific provision for it or is it an adhesive?

Like the others out there, the rho-plate screws into the existing threads for the tow hook which is why it's off-center.

I went with an option from https://licenseplatewrap.com

I've not noticed any impact to any radar / sensor functionality in my iX

I have directly purchased from the manufacturer Sto-n-Show. Their products are excellent — used them for our C7 and our C8 Corvette, e.g., nice and low mounted. Their iX system is especially great as the top of a plate will be at the very bottom of the grille. So easy to mount too.

You get a free front license plate bracket with your vehicle - at least you do in the US. In my personal opinion, it’s a sin to put a front license plate on any German vehicle. It’s required in Texas, although no one really does it. It is a good excuse for the cops to pull you over if they’re looking for a reason. It even comes with the adhesive and the screws necessary for the plate.

Now Sto-n-Show has an install video — not that its needed for so simple and quick. No drilling needed.

I went with the Sto N Sho and I have no complaints. I was even able to throw on the toll transponder and it feels secure enough.
