Oil type and oil capacity??

Hey guys i have recently picked up a 2023 M240i and loving it. I understand that a 2k mile oil change might not be necessary but I plan on doing it anyways to cast away my internal thoughts of metal shavings from "break in" period. Anyways with that being said, what oil and how much of it should I be putting into the motor? I really cant find much on this new platform i think I ended up finding that Castrol edge euro spec would work because it says BMW LL01 on it?

All the details of the oil spec are in the manual

They're not in the manual, it only says that it has to be BMW LL17FE+ and I cant find that type of oil anywhere on the internet or auto stores. Also no where in the owners manual says if LL01 is okay or how much oil to put in. But thanks for your shitty advice of letting me know that I should look in the owners manual because you think its in there.

I live in a warm climate so I’m going with 0w30 in the summer and 0w20 in the winter

As far as brands I’m going with Castrol Euro formula or BMW brand oil.

Oil capacity is 7 quarts or 6.5 liters

I also do 5k mile intervals

BTW, I just read a post on someone who did a 2k mile oil analysis and found no metal shavings.

They are in the manual. Read again.
BMW LL-12FE, LL-17FE+
Oil spec API SL, SM, or SN.
0W-20 or 0W-30.
Since 2021, BMW OEM engine oil is back to Castrol in case you are wondering.

Thank you - always help to read the manual with the eyes open! 😜

Note the US spec for oil is different
attached is from US 2022 m240x
only 0-20 viscosity is referenced
only LL-14FE and 17FE spec is referenced,
other than 1 quart of other common spec for top off if the above cannot be found.
(US spec likely different due to need to meet CAFE fuel mileage?)

It's been said elsewhere that the oil capacity is VIN specific & that you need to ask your dealer to read it off their system

I agree the stuff can be hard to find. Sounds like you plan on doing your own changes (otherwise why the concern?), why not just drop in to your BNW parts/service and buy some BMW spec oil from them.
OR ya may have to have an auto parts store order it.
there is BMW branded oil that meets the spec
there is Castrol edge 0-20 that meets the spec (be careful here, not all Castrol edge 0-20 meets the LL-14FE or 17Fe specs, lots of different Castrol versions.
Motul also makes a 0-20 LL-14Fe.
You will find these spec oils a bit costly.

that is if you want to keep with BMW spec....me i just used some old drain oil i had laying around.

Motul is what I'll probably go with. Their 8100 Eco-Clean 0W-20 would be good for most of North America.

My post #5, is the downloadable manual from Driver's Guide App (US spec 2023 m240i).
Note Oil Specs in API standard, not ACEA specs.
It lists 0W-30 as suitable grade, in addition to 0W-20, and also NO Longer notes LL-14FE, but rather LL-12FE as the replacement.
I haven't checked paper copy that came with the car to confirm same info, but interesting change nonetheless.

Are you planning on doing a diy?
6.5-7.2L seems to be the capacity, but you can buy 8Qt, see how much drains, then refill same amount.

Is there a separate drain plug on oil coolers for ZTK equipped cars?

Sorry, but I giggled a little when I saw you switch to 0w20 in the winter and then saw you live in Phoenix.

So the 2023 owner's manual now lists 0w30 as a suitable viscosity? That's hilarious because I've caught hell on this site for suggesting 30 weight in a performance engine with a turbo (lots and lots of heat). 20 weight's PRIMARY function is to improve MPG, and that's NOT what this car is about.

Yup, it sure lists 0W-30 as alternative engine oil type in the manual.
Now you can say to them LOL.
Quick search on BMW LL-12FE returns 0W-30 as well.
LL-17FE+ is 0W-20 though.
