What oil do you use?

I've been trying to find an oil to use that I can get locally for oil changes. For those that do not only go to the dealer for oil changes, what brand do you use?

I've used Mobile 1 0w20 for all 192K miles on my BRZ but it appears that this does not have the spec that BMW calls for. The only one I found so far is Castrol Euro 0w20, which does not appear to be stocked at local parts stores.

Planning to use OEM filters, but trying to avoid buying oil from the dealer.

Thanks

Following because I plan on doing my own oil change at 1200 miles since the dealer would not cover it as a freebie.

Have you looked into LiquiMolly? There was another oil thread a while back discussing the different weights and such. Looks like LM only offer 5w30 for the G42 M240. I would consider 0w30 but skeptical about 5w since I live in the Midwest.

Just did a search for them, wouldn't this work? It has BMW Longlife-17 FE+ approval, I don't recall if this is what the M240 calls for

https://www.liqui-moly.com/en/us/top...918.html#22044

Edit: Manuals says either spec is good
  • BMW Longlife-14 FE+
  • BMW Longlife-17 FE+

Does anyone know what 7 quarts (or whatever amount is needed) costs when buying from a dealer?

Looks to be correct. That is what I have listed in the online manual

Your options for BMW spec (ll-12FE) oil in the 0-30 viscosity is limited.
You have the BMW branded oil, Motul also makes a 0-30 meeting the LL-12FE specs (priced similarly as the BMW oil i believe) and now Valvoline has a Synpower 0-30 specifically meeting the LL-12Fe specs...i suspect the Synpower is hard to find here in the US but seems to be available overseas/Euro etc but not here (US) yet.

Of course you have the option of stepping out the the BMW spec and using a 0-30 or 5-30 that does not meet BMW specs. (I don't think ANY 5-30 oil meets either the 12FE, 14FE, or 17FE specs but i may be wrong. 5-30 will have too high a HTHS point to meet those specs.

BMW branded 0-20 meeting the FE14 spec costs $15.09 per quart on Amazon (yes you can by it other than at the dealer), I'm thinking the dealership sells it at about that same price? dunno for sure.

Thanks, I think I'm going to go with Liqui-Moly 0w20 or 0w30.

Trying to decide on an oil filter, OEM vs aftermarket. I read that the BMW filters had an issue with disintegrating in the housing.

I remember researching that back in the G20 forums. I believe the current OE Mann oil filters are good and don't suffer the disintegration issue. Especially nothing to worry about if you change your oil less than 10k miles apart. Plus I know they come with the proper drain bolt washer
