Oil service went from 8,000 to 6,000 miles?

So I have about 4,900 miles on the car and this morning it was showing "oil change service due at 6,000 miles". But just a couple days ago it was showing "oil change service due at 8,000 miles". Anyone know the reason for this? I did drive the car aggressively here and there after the break-in procedure but no where near enough to raise any concerns.

The car takes driving behavior into consideration when calculating oil life

You made the same mistake I made. It is not due "at" 6,000 miles. It is due "in" 6,000 miles. That minor detail makes a big difference. I took mine for service at 6,000 miles and the service advisor laughed at me and said you are very early for this service and BMW will not pay for this service. I told him I feel like a dufus.

First time BMW owner here. I'm glad I found this thread. I was thinking the same thing - my app currently states the engine oil is "Due in November 2023 or 7,003 mi."

To me that sure reads like the oil change is due at an odometer reading of 7,003 miles, which seems early to me. I'm mostly pretty easy on my car; I enjoy its performance, but I wouldn't say I drive it hard regularly and most of its miles are cruising on the interstate. If it is due approximately 7,000 miles from now, that would put it at around 12,000 miles.

It also hasn't changed in the last week that I've been checking it daily, and I put at least 50 miles on my car per day. Does this number only update every so often?

Seems like as good a thread as any for this question...

I'll be new fo BMW when my G42 arrives. For every car I've owned previously, ive changed the oil at around 5,000 miles and thought that was the general consensus for oil changes.

How do BMWs get 10,000 miles between oil changes? Is it just a matter of modern engines being build better? (My current car is a 2014 so maybe things have changed &#128516

BMW's standard interval between changes has been 10,000-15,000 for at least 20 years

5,000-mile oil change intervals haven't been the consensus for at least 15 years, except among the old-school thinkers. Most current mass-market cars have intervals of at least 10,000 miles, with many approaching 15,000 miles. Engine tolerances and, more importantly, oil chemistry has improved dramatically in the past few decades. Modern cars also have sophisticated oil life monitoring systems that consider all the factors that affect oil life in addition to simple mileage, which means engineers don't have to apply a single "CYA", overkill number to all customers, but rather tailor the number to each car's driving style and use case.

There will be a lot of enthusiasts on forums like this who say you should change your oil more frequently than the on-board computer says you should. It's up to you whether you want to listen to the engineers who designed the engine and the oil life monitoring system or follow decades-old rules of thumb.

So basically I've spent twice as much on oil changes as I've needed to over the past 9 years 😅.

Really good to know. Don't know why I never thought to check that the 5k interval i was used to growing up might have improved.

Agree … My last 3 BMWs had the 10K interval. Last August I brought my car in when the check engine light went on. The cause was quickly diagnosed as gas cap not correctly on. While there, I was told I am due for an oil change even at only 7 months and 7837 miles.

I assume this was the reason, but I certainly don’t constantly push the car hard. I didn’t see any notice or warning it was due. Now I am due August 2023 or 6,002 miles. I am currently at 13,313 which would be 11,478 miles after first one.
