Professional Stereo Upgrade

Hi,

I have a e90 320d with the professional stereo system. It's pretty basic with just the 6 CD changer in the boot. The LCD display disappears when the cabin temperature warms up which I find annoying.
I have looked into fixing the display, I found the DIY on this forum but I'm not confident enough to do the soldering etc. looking around on the Internet there seems to companies fixing the LCD for around £100.
I have seen some second hand stereos for sale, some upgraded with Bluetooth and USB, if I was to purchase an upgraded stereo is it just plug and play or will it need coding? I know I will need to purchase mic etc.
Will a stereo from a newer car work, say after 2007, or does it have to be 2005?
I'm also considering upgrading the speakers as the sound quality is pretty bad, don't have loads to spend though! Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

I can't speak for the display, but speakers you need to ascertain what system of stereo you have. If you have tweeters in the pillars you have the hifi or logic. If not you have the base.

If you want to improve the speakers on the base system I have a set of mb quart custom fit speakers which will be an improvement. These are brand new. I started down a basic upgrade route and then ended up spending a small fortune.

Upgrading the sound system is not an easy or cheap task.

Cheers sohlman.

I don't have tweeters in the pillars so I guess I have the base system.
Which speakers do you have replacements for e.g all 6 or just the floor speakers?

They are plug and play depending on the specs of donor and your car.
If there are differences, then its a matter of simple coding to match the HU per your car's specs.

I've fitted 2008/09 HUs to 2005/6 cars. They will fit but some may require coding.

Standard speakers are 15W each. If you upgrade your speakers, you will have better sound quality though standard HU does not have enough juice.

You can buy co-axials which are up for sale by sohlman or buy some hi-fi / l7 mids.

They're the ones that sohlman has listed up in the classifieds. So yes they will fit.

Is the coding a simple job or will it require a visit to BMW?

Check sticky coding thread.
If you take it to dealer, they will give you a list showing that only few compatible HUs can be fitted in your car (but thats not the case).

Cheers Makkan. Doesn't seem to be many people up north!
I have a CD changer in the boot. Am I right in thinking if the original car the radio is from did not have a CD changer then the radio would need coding to accept the CD changer? Would this also apply for the aux in?

Yes
You have to get it coded for cd changer.
Aux-in is standard so no need for that to be coded.
