Test drive a 35i and 50i... go from there.
There are more DIYer links/YTs for the 35i. FCPeuro has a dozen or more vids on maintenance for them.
I wouldn't say the 50i is unreliable, but it does feel like maintenance and costs are a bit higher on them due to the similarities to the f85 engine.
I went with a 50i. I test drove both and while the abundance of info on the 35i had me confident i could do my own maintenance, the car just lacked the power.
