Anyone look at aftermarket running boards that claim to be about 50% the cost of OEM?

Wouldn't recommend it. It wouldn't be fun if it break.

Noteworthy is the front tabs that attaches to the fender is a pain to remove. Make sure to invest on lots of painter's tape around the painted fenders to avoid scratches. |

Thank you for the DIY write-up
Thought I should contribute to this great write-up! The proj took me about 3.5 hours, not bad. All the tabs can be pulled out with some forces and wiggles. Nothing will break. Part # for the wheel well liner clips is in one of the photos. You will need 12 of them
For anyone who is thinking about running board deletion, PM me for the old cover and supports I took off (They are 4 weeks old from my 2017 3.0 xDrive). |

Thanks for the write up, and all who have contributed. My wife is 5'3" and getting in/out of the X5 is a bit of a chore for her and I think running boards would help greatly. Any chance of getting a picture of the running board with a front door open to get an idea of just how wide the step is. TIA

I actually followed these very helpful instructions many months ago when I first got my F15 without running boards... though I have found I needed to remove more rivets in the fender lining than here and there are actually two different versions of the rivets that look exactly the same save one has a rounder top vs a flatter top, so be sure to mark which goes where (not that I found it really makes a difference as they are the same length). Also I would recommend getting the plastic rivet install tool instead of the two plier method since I have found the latter to be more or less difficult when pulling those plastic rivets.
As for utility, the running boards are pretty much useless for putting stuff on the roof since they are very narrow, but great for keeping stones and debris from being thrown upward since the boards do offer some sort of deflection. My car is in the shop for the remote engine starter install, but I will post you a picture when I get it back maybe with some reference items. |

That'll be the dirty/sandy surface on the paint being scuffed by your pants. You'll just have to be diligent on not allowing your leg to hit the trim...easier said than done. Running board vehicles can be a pain too, since the running board can hold a lot of material, especially in your climate, which makes for some dirty pant legs when exiting a vehicle. After having a loaner X5 X-line with these, I actually hated them...found that they stuck out too far and I would hit my leg on them constantly. I'm 6'2", and the running board did nothing to help me into the vehicle.

You have BMW CCA you can get 10% at most dealers. Some will even sell at wholesale.
There are websites online run by some dealers that seem to undercut everyone else, so not sure what's going on there. Otherwise you're looking at possible knockoffs. |
