Caution on Car Forums
This probably applies to most forums.
I purchased a new X5 35i with the options I wanted - fairly high end. After about 700 miles on it I would rate my satisfaction as excellent. However, as I read more and more about "issues" I have decided to trade this piece of crap in on a Prius. No engine power - had to install MPPK and may need a stacked chip to boot. Piss poor AC - now have to sit on a rubber tube filled with ice water. Inadequate lights - duct taped a spotlight onto my roof rack. Trim scratches - put clear protective tape on everything. CV joints clicking - I now wear my Beretta Shooting Ear Protection. And so on....... Not taking anything away from those who have posted legitimate issues - just opining on how reading enthusiast forums can quickly load your brain with concerns. Maybe I'll hold off on the trade for a bit |

You had me for a second lol. So true, you rarely read success stories. Tough to always log in and ready concerns or issues/negativity.

Car forums are more reliable for actual solutions than the dealership with their typical "can't reproduce the problem" response.
That is why you see so many posts like mentioned above.

My view is that any forum loaded with "enthusiasts / perfectionists / ..." quickly get the concerns posted. Some of the high end audio and video forums make our obsessiveness look mild |

Haha I would agree with Gnaluzu . . .
Your dealer won't tell you the truth for fear of creating a recall. Owners don't come to a forum to rave about how wonderful their car is. Forums attract people with concerns that they know other users will be honest if they too had the same problem and this is how they fixed it. To me a forum is made up of user experience much like what consumer reports magazine does where they rank issues based on reports coming from 1,000's of owners. Talking to car dealers about your issues is like getting stereo or electronics advice from a salesperson at best buy! Unless you are lucky enough to find a qualified tech and from my experience they are few and far between. All you have to do is google your issue and posts from various forums of owners with a history of the same issues pop up. Speaking of recalls I brought my wife's 2014 audi Q5 to the dealer today that we've owned for 6 months and getting its first $135 oil change under our ownership. I've been getting recall notices. I called first to make sure they have the parts in stock, before I brought it there. It had "3" different recalls in the system to do And as to my posting of what was a possible noisy CV joint, I'd hazard to guess 98% of luxury car owners like a BMW owners or posters here . . . don't even know what a CV joint is . . . their car knowledge is they turn the key and the car just goes. |

Also, anybody who would rate their new car anything but excellent after only 700 miles obviously didn't do that great a job on the test drive.

especially the firmer X5 ride over my recent toyota highlander's cushier ride. I actually did not think I could afford a 2106 X5 because I was looking for one in the high 30's and figured I'd have to drop back a few years, so I never really put the one I was test driving through its paces. Then they offered me a deal of 46k with only 14k miles, so I stretched a little. Until I drove it after I bought it then I knew what owning a BMW was all about! I did not know how smooth its 8 speed transmission is. But the best part is putting it in sport mode when I want to zip around town. Being as powerful as it is I couldn't appreciate it on the test drive. The real thrill is coming up an on ramp and entering 65 mph traffic which takes me from the 30 mph ramp up to 80 mph in like 3 secs. And whenever I do it my wife always says . . . wow, thats breathtaking! And we both previously owned twin Saab 9-5 turbos which were no slouches on power. First car I've ever owned that I can't wait to drive it to work every morning. While I was in the showroom I was checking out the sticker on a bmw 8 cylinder 750i for $129,000. But I realized when I'm driving my X5, if I squint since its the same dash, I just imagine I'm driving the 750i with a little less power |

expedia - just a little squinting works in many aspects
I see you are from Albany - we moved to California from Binghamton - many times our weekend spree involved a trip to the Crossgates Mall in Albany - the internet really makes for connections.... |

In my experience BMW owners aren't the friendliest lot. Even a courteous nod or wave to a fellow enthusiast at a traffic signal is rarely reciprocated. It seems that many BMW owners are too good for their peers.

I try very once in a while to acknowledge a fellow BMW Driver when in in my car, and I usually give a thumbs up to any make and model I have respect for when I'm on the bike. Truth be told, most people in my geographical location are just not friendly, no matter what car they drive... Either that, or they are just buried too far into their phones while driving to notice, lol

I see it happen all the time and I totally agree with your son, it's very sad that people think this is appropriate behavior because of perceived status or performance.
