CCV Hose Replacement

Couldn't find a DIY for this. My local indy mechanic recommends replacing it at 50K mi. Local dealer said 30k. I'm at 56,XXX and it just so happens my oil consumption seems to have increased. I usually change oil (liqui moly 5W-40) every 6K mi and top off once 3-4k mi. after oil change. I've had to top off 2k mi. after my last oil change and then another 2k mi. after. In between, I've also had the drivetrain malfunction/limp mode recently (55,xxx mi) which turned out to be plugs/coils. Replacing them (DIY) restored power/acceleration, improve idle, and fuel economy. BTW local dealer wanted $1200+ for parts/labor.

No blue/white smoke, idle/power seems normal to me (definitely improved since replacing coils/plugs). No leaks noted.

So my guess is the CCV hose is likely the culprit. Any DIY on this or recommendations?

TIA

I didn't know these needed to be replaced this frequently. Is this accurate?

Do some research and look it up. The range I've found is every 30K mi. to 60K mi. So it seems reasonable that this should be replaced at 50-60K mi.

BMW actually extended the warranty of the CCV system to 10 yrs/120,000 mi for N63 engines. Interestingly S63 was not included in this.

Class action vs BMW for excessive oil consumption (N63 engines), which includes issues with CCV hoses:

I'm looking to keep my F85 for a few more years, so I'll do my best to be proactive in maintaining it.

So I've replaced the CCV hose. See attached photos from L side.
The PDF instructions posted by MUSA helped out.

One thing I'd like to point out is the shape at the other end of the CCV hose. It has 2 prongs. Where it attaches to the engine oil reservoir, you'll see that it has 2 groves for this as well. So when you've unscrewed the bottom piece, you need to *rotate* the CCV hose *counter clockwise* on R (passenger side) and *clockwise* on L (drive side) and then pull up. PDF instructions does NOT mention this. You'll need to give this a bit of a tug to get it off.

The top connector comes off as per the PDF instructions.

Didn't have enough time to get the other side done, but will tackle it this week.

BTW, I bought the CCV hoses from FCP Euro.

What's the condition of the hoses? Any signs of deterioration or did they look as good as new?

Definitely looks used up and feels brittle. Some sludge build up on the hose. There's also evidence of dried up oil on the intake boot on the R side. BMW CCV hoses are not known to last the "lifetime" of the car. Glad I'm doing this maintenance.

Thanks for sharing all this information. I will be adding this to my spring service/detail.

Did these over the weekend. Mine were a bitch to take off on both ends. So little clearance in there to rotate on the engine block side, and I had to use a pipe wrench on the opposite end to unhook from the intake boots. I realized by unscrewing that middle piece between the 2 pipes (the section towards the firewall where Bobby_Drake set the vacuum reservoir on top of allows you a little more room to wiggle the pipes on the block.

Butt dyno tells me that the car is much more responsive on throttle and revs much freer. YMMV!

I haven't paid much attention to my MPG. How many miles does your X5M have?

I'm due for oil change in a couple of weeks. Will update the thread about my oil consumption.

Disappointed to say that I am still having to top off 3k mi. after oil change despite replacing CCV hoses.

Just went to the dealershiip to get the oil changed, coolant refilled and checked. My first checkup since I bought it. They do have a really good deal $225 for 3 years of oil changes, once a year or 10,000 miles. I've had my X5M F85 for about 5 months. I was actually very happy after getting it back, the X5M is running much smoother and seems to be quieter idling. So even though this was a small amount of work, it ended up costing $1000.

The not so good news, is they tell me these CCV hoses need to be replaced and I agree. But they are going to charge me around $t1700. They were kind enough to show me videos of the broken CCV hoses. They also noted some oil leakage in the engine and I did recently have to add a quart of oil because it was low.

I am a relative newbie to working on my cars. On my old X5 I did replace air suspension bags and compressor successfully. Would like to save a lot of money and have the satisfaction of a DIY.

The oil leaking said they would need to diagnose, whenever you hear that, you know it is big bucks. Would it be a fair thing to try to DIY the CCVs hoses and see if it solves the oil leaks and then go for broader diagnosis if there are still leaks? How hard is this to do?
