We could guess all day long...and it is still shooting darts at the board. The CEL is related to the car's emissions system...and without the code that indicates which sensor set the fault...its all a crap shoot.
There are multiple systems involved, fuel, ignition, air, transmission...and the CEL could be related to any of them. Take a look at the DTC (diagnostic trouble code) chart below which is what the generic OBD II code readers will reveal. If you don't have a scanner...in the USA most states you can drive to most auto parts stores (Advanced Auto, AutoZone, Pep Boys, O'Reilly's, etc) and they will pull OBD II codes for FREE. Check if they do this in Canada, too.

A simple google search for OBD II U0097 comes up with this: https://U0079.autotroublecode.com/
(it took awhile for the page to load...so give it a chance before dismissing it) The OBD II DTC chart that was posted above also points in a direction based on the 1st character of the DTC...here's the chart again to help explain what may have happened:

sometimes when the battery gets older with these BMWs, they start to throw codes unrelated. or if your car sits outside and its super cold.

Yeah, I was about to suggest getting OBD adapter and buying the app. Easy and fast, keep in in the glove box so you can read codes and get info quickly.

Did you look up P0E47? From what I found it’s “hybrid/EV battery pack” related. I’m guessing your 50i isn’t a hybrid…but perhaps it has something to do with your batteries.
