50i huh? is Tony's kit much of an upgrade over your larger 50i brakes? I know you'll get better calipers, but the rotor sizes are about the same on his kit. With the BMWBK you get x5m sized rotors, but unfortunately still the lame clamp style rear caliper.

Very true, i often get asked to compare the 50i kit and my set up, so theres a few things id like to mention/compare between 50i and my kit first: Size of the rotors is 374mm vs 365mm, weight 30.1 vs 31lbs. Rear rotors are the same but you get a larger pad surface and a full size monoblock caliper. So you are looking at a much larger pad in the front, aluminum hub, larger and lighter rotors readily available everywhere online, with excellent prices and fast delivery from rockauto. These kits are a significant bump in looks and braking performance/consistency, and is super popular with those who tow and take their x5 to the track. They look great and fill the wheel up very nicely. Now on to the mperformance (old x5m set up) and my kit comparison: Weight front 30.1 vs 36lb (f85) or 38-40lb (old x5m). Full cast like zimmerman are 40lbs+ which is a crazy amount of rotational weight. Rear weight difference is pretty major, given the size difference, i will get 50i rear rotor to know the exact weight for future reference. Price: best fronts that you get with my kit cost 125 ea , rears are 50-60ea. There is much cheaper full cast front examples available. Mperformance EACH front disc is 360-380 (f85) front, and around 200-250 rear. Every time you replace rotors would be 1000+. My kit will be 400ish. So is picking up a ballpark of 25-30lbs in rotational weight (pretty major imo) and cost difference of the parts (rotors/pads ) of at least 600+ worth the looks difference ? Not sure. I believe my kit to be perfect balance in cost, in what you ACTUALLY get, and what these brakes ACTUALLY are capable of, and when its time to replace pads/rotors , you dont stress where you can come up with 1100-1200 right quick and rather would spend the 600 different towards the rear tires for example. Long story short, best thing you can get imo is f10 m5 set up in the front, and my x5m set up for the rear. Thats if money dont matter. You pick up a little weight but performance amd looks are outstanding. But id stay away from old x5m set up because of weight and cost, imo. |

Man IMO the 50i stock brakes suck after any sort of hard braking. They start fading so fast, it's kind of pathetic haha I can't believe BMW chose to put single piston calipers on a 5,100+ lb performance SUV. Besides the irritatingly quiet exhaust, it's really the only complaint I have about the way it comes from the factory lol

I'm sure a mix of both, but I think having the 6 piston calipers up front and 4 piston rear would be a huge improvement with dispersing that braking power over the rotors. Also would just be more efficient with fixed piston calipers all around instead of the sliding single piston.

Next, step up to higher temperature pads. Since your upgraded fluid will no longer cook, your pads will need to be able to withstand higher operating temperatures since heat will transfer to a much more resilient fluid. Add a little bit of air to brake ducting wouldn't hurt either, something the M-sport package introduced in 2017. Combine those elements, and a stock brake setup will be pretty much fade free, even with light track work. |

Very good point on stepping up to a proper brake fluid. @shimmy23 what brake fade are you experiencing, do you think it might be pad compound, or more like rotors getting hot and sort of glazing over ? Bigger rotor surface definitely helps, also bigger pad surface and proper compound helps greatly with the fade.
I think i have picture of my brakes behind 22” wheels |
