Wheel hub rust
Hi fellow bimmer fans! My X5 spends quite a bit of time outside and my wheel hubs started to show rust. How do I clean that and what should coat it with to prevent that from reoccurring?

That looks like your rotor hat. You can sand it down and paint it or--as I've heard some do--coat it with grease. If you know that you are replacing your rotor or upgrading soon, look for a painted set or do it yourself.
There are previous threads that touched on this issue across all different platforms (e.g. https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1698929 , https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=968147 , https://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1621826) |

As said, not your hub, but your rotor hat.
Getting treated or painted will help, but it is inevitable, it will always come back, just a matter of time. You can always splash the cash out for two piece rotors and new calipers. Judging by the grooves in your rotor and the lip on the edge, perhaps a time for a new rotor then?

Once I find time for a wash, I'll take a picture of my OEM Fronts and my 1 year old Brembo blanks I put on my rears so you can see the difference.
The coated Brembos are showing signs of oxidization and rust faster than the OEMs for sure, but at 1/3 the price for my wifes DD it made sense for us.

Look for special paint in AMAZON, take off rims, use a wire brush to remove the rust, paint rotor hat. (Since you require new discs very soon, you can remove the rust without taking too much cars of the disc)
Once you get your brakes fixed, check and maybe apply 1 more paint coat. Actually the amount of rust is nothing to worry, only cosmetic problem |
