Fumoto Oil Drain Plugs

Morning All,

I just did an oil change on my 2017 35i yesterday and opted to install a Fumoto valve (in place of the drain plug) as I have had good experiences with them on previous vehicles. Following install, however, I have some concerns over how far the valve protrudes from the skid plate (pics attached).

As the valve is within the diameter of the wheels, I’m not so concerned over speed bumps. That being said, my concern is related to any debris that may be unavoidable on the road while driving.

Are my concerns valid? Or is this nothing worth worrying over?

I’d use the version that doesn’t have the long nipple…I think it’s the “S” version? Or even the no nipple whatsoever version if you’re draining into a pan.

How did you get it to fit on the oil pan? Did you need an adapter? It wasn’t going to fit on my 50i oil pan without an adapter and possibly some modification due to the ridge around the drain opening.

I'm sure you will be fine, but it does appear to be vulnerable to road derris and flying objects. Being one of the lowest snare points, it seems to beg the attention of Murphy's Law.

No adapter needed. It simply threaded in and I was able to torque to the OEM specs (25nm) using my torque wrench.

I typically drain into a pan, but the intent here is to easily drain back into empty containers to ship back to FCP Euro via a tube.

they have shorter versions but maybe not in our size? OP, link to the one you bought?

i'm running a short version on my bronco. it requires a little adapter if you want to attach a tube to it for draining.

That is certainly a concern and I wouldn't run it.

Would you happen to have a pic of it installed? I wonder if the bottom of your oil pan is different than mine.

The drain plug is recessed into the oil pan on the 50i 🤦‍♂️

Unfortunately, I don't currently have a pic of the valve as it integrates with the pan, however I'll be swapping out the existing valve (F-139N) this Sunday when the low profile version arrives (F-139).

When I do the swap I'll take a pic of both options and report back.

This is the one that is currently installed.

This one has been ordered and is set to arrive on Sunday.

No adapter needed on the N55. I'll follow up with some more in-depth pics when I do the swap on Sunday.

Oh hell no to this. I don't find it too much of an inconvenience to put a little upward pressure on the drain plug as I loosen and then pull away quickly. I just hold the catch pan up a bit for 2 seconds and no mess.

certainly not needed but very convenient. These are common installs in the diesel trucking/transportation world. time is money.

As I mentioned in a follow-up post, I ordered the low profile version (also linked in the follow-up) and installed yesterday.

This is definitely the safer option, however I’ll be using this 5k interval (and subsequent oil change) to decide if it’s really worth it to keep installed.

As this version doesn’t have the nipple to attach a tube directly into a collection container, the juice may not be worth the squeeze when considering risk vs. ease of oil change.

Will report back with any issues, or in 5k miles.

Yep, that’s why I mentioned the “S” version, it has a nub to attach a plastic nipple you can run a hose off of.

And yep, your oil drain isn’t recessed like it is on the 50i. I really wish they hadn’t done that so I could put a fumoto valve on mine without needing an adapter.

Oh! I guess they changed it so if there’s no profile pic it’s just some large pixels. Before I just had a blue circle with a head profile in it lol

Oh now I see what you mean since I’m now on the mobile app instead of the desktop version like earlier when I was at my desk.

I rotate between the two but probably spend more time on the desktop version. This is honestly the first time I’ve noticed a profile pic on the app lol.

Question, I just installed this in my E70 and it seems to be leaking. Did you use the asbestos crush washer? Or did you use a copper or nylon washer?

Thanks!

The Fumoto plug comes with a nylon washer, which is the only type that should be used when installing.

Did you use a washer? A crush washer? The washer from the OEM drain plug?

There are a few possibilities as to why you're experiencing a leak. It could be related to:

- An improper washer being used.
- The plug/valve being cross-threaded.
- An issue with the valve itself (if the leak is coming from the inside of the valve)
- Residual oil from a messy oil change that is pooled on top of the skid plate.
