Injector replacement

Well, looks like at almost 125k miles my injectors need replacing. Keep getting “bank 2 lean” when I give it a good amount of throttle.

For those of you who have replaced your injectors, any special tips or tricks? Anything I should look out for? Special tools needed? Maybe an “injector puller” I’ve seen? I know the injector compensation numbers will have to be put in the ECM.

I did post it in the F15 forum as well, but the N63TU and S63 are pretty much the same engine in terms of working on them

Most peeps in the F15 forum seem to have N55’s

They can be removed (very carefully) with a pair of multigrips. Put a nut on the injector (in place of the fuel line nut) and pull. As you mentioned, there is also a special tool for this however I have never required it. As tempting as it is, best not to wiggle side to side however if these injectors are going in the bin, then damage to the injector isn't a concern. However, you dont want to damage the bore in the head where the teflon ring seals.

I have done a few, some come out relatively easily whilst some are an absolute pain in the ass. Luck of the draw...

Also, check the injector bore and clean as best as possible before removing injectors. At 125k miles, there's a good chance the bores have dirt and debris in there, you don't want that dropping into the cylinder.

Thanks! Do you have a preferred cleaning method or is it basically try to clean it with a long Q-tip swab?

Its very tough to clean them spotless. Try and loosen the debris (gently) with a q-tip or similar.

Then use a shop vacuum, or get a vacuum cleaner and stick a tube in the nozzle, then tape up. You can then stick the tube down near the injector.

If debris do fall in the cylinder through injector port, you can also stick this vacuum tube in via either injector port or spark plug hole to try and suck debris from top of piston.

I use special tool, dont think it's needed for damaged Teflon seals like minds. For dirt I use compressed air, then straw duct taped to vaccum. Still saw dirt fall in after pulling Injectors out, stuck vaccum in there but waiting for borescope camera to be sure. I'm doing valve cover gasket n spark plug gaskets since they failed. I do a lot of summer driving.

Is there anything else I should do while I’m replacing injectors? Plugs and coils were replaced about 30k miles ago. Going to replace the o-ring on one of the PCV hoses where it comes out of the valve cover as well.

Adjustable pry bar will save your day on removal. If flow numbers different from stock then you will need to code that injector

I actually have the removal tool ordered, will be here Wednesday.

What’s interesting is when I checked the values that are in the ECM they were ALL 215…wondering if BMW tries to do matched sets when initially assembling engines, it happened by coincidence, or if they just entered 215 for all of them and went with it 😂

Mine were 309 I believe. Local euro shop advised that special tool (they have quality brand, not amazon), doesnt work as well as the pry bars, and they do injectors all the time. They let me borrow the bars that they use, was super easy to leverage an pull. Up to you, i am here to help 👍

Yeah, I may try pry bar first since I’m replacing the injectors with new ones, not trying to save them…I have a couple different sizes of pry bars

Ha ha I’m sure there is, I still don’t know how to search this forum 😂

I found a couple videos on YouTube that show using the tool I ordered or similar to remove a couple adjacent injectors, haven’t found a start to finish one. Basically remove a buncha sheeeit and pull the injectors. 😉

Oh, wait, I’m dumb…you mean the ones that have the indexing head, right? Where you can adjust the angle of the pry head, not the length of the handle, correct?
