Any downsides to upgrading to 21” or 22”s?

Any downsides to upgrading from 20”s to 21” or 22” wheels on a 2018 mSport? Same question for staggered vs square.

I’m worried 22”s are going to look laughably big and that a squared setup will be very boxy. No plans to lower or for spacers, but advice is welcomed.

You get the look but you give up cheaper tires, ice snow or even heavy rain traction, life of your suspension, comfort of your ride, durability of the rims.

from what i've seen, there isn't what i consider a top tier tire available in 22" sizing for our chassis. all the 22s i've seen on an f15/f85 has cheap tires.

There's definitely downsides, many of which have already been mentioned above.

However, there's upsides too, IMO. At least with 21's, which I think are the perfect size wheel for this platform. I have 20's for winter, 21's for summer, and much prefer the 21" look. However, tire choices are extremely limited with 21's, but at least with the tires that are available there's good brands, not so much with 22's.

If you aren't planning to lower it I'd avoid 22's for sure, your X5 will look silly with huge wheels/tiny sidewalls w/ stock wheel gap. 22's can only be pulled off if lowered on coilovers, IMO. Not to mention, unless you have an upgraded brake kit, the tiny stock rotors on your 35i will look pretty dumb behind 22's.

I don't notice any difference whatsoever in ride quality between OEM 20's and 21's (Michelin's on both sets).

Plus, if you run two different sets year round you can go years without replacing tires, I'm up to 5

I went from 20” run flat (469) to 21” (375) non-run flat on x5 xdrive 35i msport with standard suspension. The ride is the same. If you go 10mm less width on the 21”, there are a lot more choices in tires and prices came down significantly. I’m running 275/35/21 and 315/30/21. You can get these 21” size with Michelin AS3+ set for aroud $1500 a set. My 20” RFT cost at least that much.
