35i exhaust valve

Just noticed today while my car was at idle that exhaust pressure was only comming through the driver side exhaust and not the passenger side one. Went under the car and found out there is a valve on the right side. Does anyone have an idea of how this valve works and what is the purpose of it?

I believe the exhaust flap only opens at certain speeds. I had the same thing on my F30 335

I believe it stays closed until the oil/engine are at a certain temperature. It also helps heat up the cats faster in cloder weather keeping the valve closed. Once the temps hit a certain point, the valve should remain open.

Checked today again after a 30 minute drive and was still closed when the car was a at idle. I've read somewhere that it opens after 2,500 rpm's and that one of the purposes of it is to increase low rpm torque. Does anyone know for sure how it works and what is the real purpose of it? It also looks bad when there is condensation and smoke is only coming out on the left side.
