I like the new one's interior better. As goes the rest, it's six of one, half dozen of the other. Nothing's especially wrong with either; nothing's knocking me down with joy about either either.

The major problem with the exterior is that all automakers are conforming to A) pedestrian crash regulations and B) better aerodynamics to squeak out every last bit of fuel economy. The former makes the front of the cars all upright and the space from the top of the wheel to the top of the hood too great. The latter and the former combine to slowly make every vehicle have a similar overall shape.
All of the large exterior changes make the F15 far more aerodynamic which smooths out the rear wheel arches (so less aggressive) and makes the hatch area messy (and oddly Acura MDX-like). Overall, I like the front end design. The side-profile is ruined by the extra space beyond the D-pillar with the hatch- the back is simply large and not very clean. The E70 had perfect proportions- there's no arguing there. The interior was in much need of an update and it appears to be first-rate. Assuming you still have the clear view out of the E70, it will be a welcome place to spend many hours. The efficiency will be great. The interior is beautiful. The exterior will do. The real question is whether we have lost another good driving BMW. It used to be any model BMW would drive well- these days you have to very specific. The 5er is horrible, the X3 is okay with the electronic dampers set to sport and the F30 works only in RWD with the sport suspension set in sport mode (too many specifics for a group of cars that should inherently be the best handling and steering cars in each class). A close examination in person followed by a test drive will reveal the F15's true self....

I typically like the new models and was eagerly awaiting this model. However, I am quite disappointed in the exterior this time. I will keep my e70 and will probably upgrade to a later model X5, hopefully an X5M when the price drops. The interior is quite impressive and definitely a nice refresh from current, but that is not enough to make me lust after the new one.

It took me a good minute to figure out which was the old and which was the new interior. Other than the screen everything else looks the same?

I'm biased since I own a 2012 X5 50i, but I think the E70 looks much more athletic and fluid. The F15 looks more hulky and not very sporty. Overall, I really dislike the new design language BMW has introduced. Aside from the E65, I think Bangle did an awesome job with BMW styling. The E90/92, E60, and E70 are three of my favorite BMW designs.

The difference is actually pretty small. Even the size is very similar.
With X3 increasing size, I thought the new X5 will gain more length and allows a reasonable 3rd row seat. Guess not.

I hope they change something before they start becoming clone models like Audi. Having said that I like the F interior. Prefer the E front lights. |

E70 is much better. It is more balanced as design and more beautiful.
Also the interior it is more refined. BMW managed to give E70 that superb hiden glove box, integrated navi screen and no other visible stuff. The new one has a ordinary ugly glove box, another ugly box on the left side which is very visible, and a terrible naviscreen Garmin style. The plastic trim on the wheels well was an extension of the fender on the previous model providing a more sporty and muscular look. I wish I had that on the X1. Now they make it simple and man, what an ugly look it has. The doors have this protective lines before, now they have eliminate them, welcome to the dent world. The stitching on the seats is bad, too much, the new patern does not show class or luxury it is just another busy pattern looking for some identity. Previous seats were simpler but more refined and beautiful. Not to mention, the front was more agresive and had a different stance than this new one. The "nostrils" are too big. Nice job at "blending in" with the ordinary vehicles out there... So much about evolution...epic fail from my point of view. I will never buy it. Last edited by Teutonic; 05-30-2013 at 01:58 AM.. |

I love those E70 was better post. If it makes current e70 owners feel better. Sure, why not.
I love the F15. That's how I felt when I saw the F10, that the E60 was so much better. But after seeing the F10 in person more and more. It actually was the perfect design. It might look bloated in picture but after seeing it in person sooner or later. Everyone's going to be wanting one. That's always the trend. |

I just posted my thoughts on the F15 in the other tread, and bashing it. Next to the E70 things aren't as clear. From the back, the E70 looks very dated, so does the side, the front goes to the E70, much more elegant imo. The headlights reaching out to the kindey grills, it looks unnatural imo. Dissapointing key design element gone bad! The interiour looks to follow the other new bimmers, more upscale and more premium looking. I guess we need to see the M version, when will it be available?

Like front, not the rear
I think the new model looks superb from the front but the old model still looks better from the rear. From the side I will wait to see it in the flesh. The interior of the new one looks really great.

I'll reserve judgment until I see it for real, but initial impression is that I don't like it as much. That said, cars always look better when you see them with your own eyes rather than in pics which takes out some of the depth.
As others said, the upright grill that is there to conform to pedestrian standards looks odd to me, as does the way the lights extend to the grill. I don't like it on the 3 and I don't like it here. The front is too busy and the intake trim looks strange the way it is shaped like a G. I also don't like the extra space behind the D pillar. It has the effect of making it look like a hatchback or wagon instead of an SUV. Definitely looks like an overgrown X3 or a 135i with an X3 body kit. I have never cared for the look of the X3 as much as the X5, but in this case it might actually be a better choice. The interior is incrementally better, but really very similar. The E70 shown doesn't have the leather dash which makes a big difference, as it does on the F15. I'm also not a fan of the standup screen look. I like my screens integrated into the dash. Other than that, it's pretty much the same. Looking at the M sport models for a hint of the X5M doesn't help, as that just reinforces the hatchback look. The M sport in the pics looks like an M135i to me.

Can you imagine what it's like to be a designer here, using the E53 and E70 as your inspiration, wanting to create an evolution of that, but then....nein nein nein, it must be uglier, less SAV, more Chrysler minivan, it must have a blunt vertical nose, giant kidney grill that says LOOK AT ME, I HAVE A BMW, it must have slab sides with no tapering - you know, like the new ML and a UPS van...exterior fail.
I don't want to hear about the pedestrian safety regulations causing these hideously square and tall front ends and belt lines. Figure it out, there are many SUVs out there that have managed to still look tapered and sporting. Don't use the current Honda Pilot as your inspiration. The rear end looks cheap, more X1 than X3. As someone else said, tail lights look like sausages. That said, it'll grow on me, and I'd still take this over any other luxury SAV at the moment. The E70 with 20s still looks so good though it would be hard to justify a new one over a E70 CPO. Interior is seriously high end, well done there, though there's nothing sub par about the style or fit and finish of the E70s.
