X5 windshield

I've been waiting for a new windshield for my 2014 X5 diesel with heads up display (and windshield insurance) for 3 weeks now (13" crack in front of driver) and was told by Seattle BMW that it could be another 4 weeks before it gets replaced. Apparently there are nearly 1,000 X5's waiting for new windshields in the US and they are on massive backorder. Personally I find this unacceptable for a $75k vehicle.

How bad is the windshield now? Huge/major crack in your line of sight or a couple spider web cracks? If the former, then certainly push to be at the head of the queue. The latter, I'd just ride it out.
Understand the frustration with the wait, but IMO it's not a cause to dump the car over unless this is the straw that broke the camel's back. Back order is back order, regardless of your $75K car or $100K+ X5M.

Edit: 13" crack in front of the driver IS indeed grounds for pushing; sorry if I missed seeing that last night

I had to have mine replaced last month also with HUD and it took 4 days for them to source and install a new oem BMW windshield. It was only supposed to take 2 days but the first one arrived with a crack lol so then I had to wait two more days. They did tell me that my 2nd windshield was the last one available in the country so I believe that there is a shortage. I hope they are able to source one for you soon!

Hey contact BMW NW, they got me a driver side window overnighted when BMW Seattle said it would take three weeks from the East coast. Could work :

Sounds like complete BS honestly. For the right amount, shipping shouldn't be a problem overnight

Took mine in a few weeks back to have the windshield replaced ($2200 since it had heads up and rain sensing) took 1 day to get the glass and another day to let it dry. This is southern cal.

Took mine for my 2015 X6 / 28 days. If it is unsafe have them give you a loaner and burn mileage on a vehicle thats not yours till its fixed.

That's brutal! I agree, definitely unacceptable...especially given the number of F15 X5's on the road since launch in late 2013. [knocks on wood] Glad I dont need a windshield right now.

Would a non-BMW windshield sourced by Safelite work with HUD and wiper sensors?

My windshield just cracked today.

there is a lot to removing a x5 windshield. i'd rather have a bmw tech do the dissassembly.
plus, make an insurance claim. pay your deductible and dont worry about the rest.

but there is definetly an issue with these x5 windshields. there are too many stories about them breaking. hopefully bmw thickens the glass or something.

I noticed that lots of windshields are being replaced. I feel like the windshield is not as durable as previous BMW cars. I have a few nicks from small rocks being flung and my previous cars has had a lot of small road debris hit the windshield without any issues in the past.

Right now there are no third party companies who make a windshield that will fit the x5. Our windshield cracked back in July and it took until this past Friday to finally be fixed.

Thankfully I just realized I have BMW windshield coverage which is still valid. I'll be calling my SA and get in line for a replacement!

A slightly different question...I picked up my CPO X5 a couple weeks ago. I initially opted for the windshield replacement plan for $800 for 5 years. But after calling my insurance company (USAA) they said that I already have full glass replacement coverage under my comprehensive plan. So I called the dealer and cancelled it. But after reading a lot of posts regarding the "proper way" to install it, and how satellite apparently is "horrible" at installing glass on BMWs with a HUD, I am rethinking the cancellation.

One, what are your thoughts of the protection plan? And two, do i still have time to repurchase the coverage? I am still within the 30 days.

Despite the long wait list, my dealer found a new windshield somewhere and its being installed now. I received no response from BMW North America, but found the dealership owner Lithia Motors to be extremely responsive in finding a solution.

I highly recommend buying the BMW windshield insurance if you have the HUD option.

My insurance lets me use the in house glass installer at my dealer and Oem windshields. State Farm.
