X5M up in flames
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Yesterday the investigation happened. Apparently the dealer did not tighten down the Negative or grounding wire to the battery after its last service leaving a gap. This caused the battery to arc and start the fire... No defect on the car itself but rather SEVERE error at the dealership... As for myself I am still having breathing issues and am going to a pulmonary specialist to resolve the issues. Well I don't post here much. But wanted to let everyone know my 2016 X5M w/18k miles caught on fire this morning. Fire department said it started from the rear taillight. Crazy thing is I was stuck in the car cause it shut off and wouldn't let me out. Luckily after what seemed like an hour I was able to power it up a and unlock the doors. Wouldn't let me out of the freaking car otherwise... I will post photos later. Won't let me from my phone. Last edited by heat'n'cool; 12-09-2016 at 01:58 PM.. |

That's terrifying, glad you're OK. But you were in the car for an hour before you could exit the vehicle?
Keep us posted on what BMW will come back with after they have taken a look. |

Yes thankfully I was able to get out.
Defiantly an electrical issue. BMW NA already has a few people coming to look at it. However I'm in he hospital because of smoke inhalation and elevated carbon monoxide in my blood. Have me on 100% oxygen and have to be on it most of the day to get my levels to normal. The kicker is they know about it an NO ONE has reached out to see if I was ok. Never driving a BMW again unfortunately this scared me so badly I probably will have nightmares for a while. And I don't get scared easily. |

Wow that is crazy.
Considering the taillight still looks in tacked I would say the fire didn't start from that point.

Sorry to hear this. Glad that you are safe. Sounds terrifying.
Can you give us some more details? Were you driving when this started? Notice anything unusual in the car before the fire? How did you notice that a fire had started? Did the car itself warn you that something was wrong? Any information is greatly appreciated. |

Wow, glad you are safe and sound.
Seems like it started from the ASD or Audio Amp unit.

Wow, that's some crazy $hit! You hear this type of thing happening to Ferraris, Lambos, Teslas, but never BMWs. Glad you're okay and were able to make it out safely. Very worrisome that this could happen to any of us.

Can-am, we all know that all cars can catch fire. I think the biggest problem we have is the doors locking and trapping him inside. The opposite is suppose to happen, all lights come on doors open and get the hell out.

Sorry to hear you ended up in the hospital because of this. We all have layers tints on top of our glass I'd assume, which prevents folks from getting in but it obviously also inhibits you from getting out. I know in Europe one of those glass hammers is mandatory in many countries. I might have to invest in on here...

Might be time to lawyer up brother Glad you are ok. I am assuming BMW NA is all over this .... its not often that new cars just catch on fire for no apparent reason. |
