X6M electric fan runs always after stop

Hello everybody,

New X6M owner here. Love the car, however i have few questions:

1. What winter packages are you guys using? I have the 20s (611 design i believe)

2. Does your X6M run an electric fan for about 5-10 mins every time after you stop? (dealer says it's ok)

3. What is the best exhaust for the X6M? I have a GT Haus exhaust right now (previous owner installed it) - not a big fan, especially that i have a 2 yo daughter.

Cheers,
Dan

1. BMW Winter Package. 20's/611 works great.
2. Same here for 17,000 miles.
3. Best is really up to your desire. I just ordered Akrapovic. Although, I'm in the minority and really like stock after it gets about 10,000 miles on it. Get's a bit louder. Bought Akra only due to mod disease.

Thanks for the feedback.
1. Did you buy only 2 wheels for the back or you bought 4 more only 285 all around?
2. It's a funny feeling since i did not have a car that did that, yet. No Mercedes does that (to my knowledge) even the twin turbo ones. Every time i leave the car in the garage and that fan kicks in to cool off the turbos, i feel like it's gonna catch on fire ))
3. I need a stock exhaust i think. Where do i find someone thats looking for an upgrade?

1. 4 all around. Stock fronts would be dangerous since the front tires do most of the braking. Plus the compound would be extremely slick at cold temps.

2. I'm keeping my stock exhaust for later trade in , but you are in luck as an OEM exhaust is for sale in classifieds.

I cannot count the numerous times people have told me that my car is still on when it's actually off because of the fan

The cooling fan draws a lot of electrical power and wears down the battery prematurely when you stop the car.

If you can do it easily, it's highly recommended to attach a battery charger when you turn off the engine - say, when returning to your garage.

One of many good chargers is made by C-TEK and it takes just a few seconds to connect it to the charging connector under the bonnet.

I have one for my M4. Would the same one work for the F85?

OP, you might want to try and cool the car down before getting to your garage, by driving moderately for the last 2 miles or so. Put everything in comfort mode.

I have tried that. It's set up this way; even if i go for 1-2 mile run around the house at slow speeds it will still come on after i stop. Not as long, but will come on. Tested this already And btw, most of the times its on comfort mode. Don't really feel the need to blast it all the time.

It?s the engine fan cooling oil which is still being pushed through your turbos. It?s a fantastic (if not annoying) safeguard that prevents oil from baking in the turbos when the engine is switched off.

A long time ago, great care had to be taken with hi-po turbo cars too cool the turbos before turning off the car. What you?re hearing is BMW?s solution.

I think i will get the same winter package. That of course if i'm getting the stock exhaust and will like it with my daughter in the car. If not, i am running back to Porsche. Hopefully i will keep it. Any feedback on the OEM exhaust since i did not have a chance to hear it? The dealer that i bought my car from failed to inform me that the previous owner spent 6k on an aftermarket catback. Nothing wrong with that just it's not my personal preference. Coming from a S550 4MATIC i've become accustomed to power and silence at the same time. Now i have crazy power and crazy noise (got me a ticket 3 days ago - 24 over) So i wanna go back to normal noise levels. I'm guessing the stock exhaust is already decently loud.

They are saying it's normal. So just leave it be. I guess before turbo cars had a timer to keep the engine running a little more after you stop to prevent the turbo lines from frying. For me it was a shock as coming from an S 550 4 MATIC (v8 biturbo) i do not recall having a fan run every time i stop. Maybe a couple of times on extreme heat? Small turbos obviously but still a high power engine. I'm starting to become immune to it. Actually thinking about it not even the Cayenne turbo does that. I had one for a day when they serviced my diesel Cayenne and do not recall hearing a fan after i stopped the car. Now its been a while since that happened, but i am sure i would remember as i am always paying attention to the noises the car im driving makes. Feel free to correct me if it's otherwise.

Just like the S63 is louder than the S550, the M is louder than the 35i or 50i models with stock exhausts. I drove with the stock exhaust for the first 2000 miles and with the windows up and and not going WOT it was pretty quiet. Also - consider turning off ASD if that hasn't been done already as that may help.

S63 noise is sexy as hell. I definitely dig that. No disrespect to the after market exhaust manufacturers, i doubt they have the same type of budgets to put in R&D. So for top of the line vehicles, i incline to go with factory options.

Yes essentially it taking care of what use to be called "sleep time"on turbo cars, after arriving some where you had to sit with car running for about 5 minutes to allow turbo(s) to cool down otherwise you burned the bearing in the turbo.
