Ok, I'll bite.
How many CFM of air does the engine need? Does it need more than the 900 CFM that the stock system flows? Does the extra 240 CFM provide a real advantage? And by real advantage I mean more than 3 or 4 horsepower. |

intake alone is like new sneakers for someone with a broken leg. without supporting software and hardware it will not improve performance or mobility. tune+exhaust+intake and now you got yourself something worth throwing money at.

I installed a Dinan CAI with the (already installed) Stage II piggy-back. SOTP feel is more responsive and quicker in my humble opinion. OP, thanks for making up my mind to purchase this CAI.

The Dinan filter design is like having a velocity stack built in. Velocity stacks have proven to smoothen the air flow and in turn generate a little more power. I had a Dinan but really wanted an open air system for sound purposes.

The only other system on the market that I saw which may be worth the money is RK. Who did you go with?

I went with RK. It’s the only open system on the market
Been raining really hard lately and felt the need to swap the stock box in. Good chance to feel the difference. The stock box felt like the low end torque was not noticeably better than the rk but when at some speed the RK has better response. Performance wise I would say slightly better overall but depends where are looking for the power. The rk design is pancaked to fit under the hood. Not sure if it’s the best airflow design but doesn’t look there was another choice. Wonder how much it affects the overall performance Was researching if someone made a oval pancake velocity stack that might be incorporate but haven’t found anything. |

I believe you will find that low end is lost and output is moved to a different portion of the power band when installing any intake but more so with one sucking in far more air.

If it's missing any low-end torque, I sure can't tell it's missing; this thing explodes off the line! I do however, keep standing start launches to a minimum (like only a couple times in 4 mos). I've still never tried the actual launch control. All in all, it's a pretty amazing vehicle__this is our 4th X5 ('02 & '05 4.4s & '11 35)__and my wife's daily driver. It hit 19k miles today, and still presents as new.

You have supporting hardware that negates that effect. Intake alone is what generally removes a slight bit of low-end.

Nobody posted a picture of the intake on the car.
This was shortly after we got it home, and I removed ALL the plastic shrouding to wash and wipe off the dealer-detailed Armor All-like sticky crap. Just a sheen of Hybrid V07 now (SAND sticks to anything oily down here).

Might be a dumb question...is there a reason why we couldn't just buy the Dinan filters and skip the CF cover? Other than aesthetics, is there something I'm missing?

Why? You would be drawing in hot air from the engine bay. There's a reason it's called the 'Dinan Carbon Fiber Cold Air Intake'.

I was looking to save about $1k by buying just the filters and use that towards a piggyback tune. I realize that without the lid to insulate it I would be drawing in more hot air, but was thinking the cold air coming in from the grille thru the bottom of the filter box will offset that a little.

Wow, nice find with the additional mods. We also picked up a 2017 50i for my wife, but she's only driven it a handful of times. I keep taking it to the mountains
